{"id":3034,"date":"2012-08-23T08:15:50","date_gmt":"2012-08-23T12:15:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/simplelife\/?p=3034"},"modified":"2012-08-29T08:55:08","modified_gmt":"2012-08-29T12:55:08","slug":"teaching-a-bible-study-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/simplelife\/2012\/08\/teaching-a-bible-study-part-1.html","title":{"rendered":"Teaching a Bible study&#8211;Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/simplelife\/files\/2012\/08\/Bible-study-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-3036 alignleft\" title=\"Bible study 1\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2012\/08\/Bible-study-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>When studying the Bible, there are two ways to approach the Scriptures. \u00a0Of course, one method is almost always preferred over the other metod by most teachers. \u00a0Yet, there is perhaps no best way to teach God&#8217;s Word. \u00a0 Each one has its strengths and its weaknesses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exegesis&#8211;<\/strong>First, you can use what is a verse-by-verse exegesis. \u00a0In this method, there is a\u00a0exposition and explanation of a specific verse. \u00a0It is especially noted as an in depth explanation or critical interpretation of a text. \u00a0In this method, a person will probably begin at chapter 1, verse 1 of a book of the Bible and teach each verse until the end of the book. \u00a0The purist will begin at Matthew and teach the entire New Testament or begin at Genesis and teach the entire Bible.<\/p>\n<p>I have a love\/hate approach to this method of teaching. \u00a0I love digging into God&#8217;s word and discovering the nuances of what the Holy Spirit wants to teach us in a particular verse.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2012\/08\/wading-through-water.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3037\" title=\"wading through water\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2012\/08\/wading-through-water.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a>However, on the other hand, teaching the exergesis method is much like wading through water for me. \u00a0I love the first five minutes when I&#8217;m wading; but soon I want to either swim to quickly get to the other side. \u00a0Or I want get out of the water all together. \u00a0I find when I teach the Bible in this method, I want to teach every new and old revelation that I note. \u00a0I have taught one verse for five or six lessons.<\/p>\n<p>Some verses especially in the epistles are so incredibly rich in value that I have a terrible time moving to the next verse. \u00a0Therefore, it can take years to teach one of Paul&#8217;s letters. \u00a0For other teachers, it&#8217;s a gold mine from which they can glean lessons that empower them with glee. \u00a0For me, I get bored. \u00a0After about five verses (and two months of lessons), I want to begin to skip and jump over the truths in order to finish the letter.<\/p>\n<p>Teachers who are able to effectively teach by this method, don&#8217;t camp on one verse as I do. \u00a0They are able to move gracefully through the books of the Bible effectively, teaching the prominant truths without making each verb and noun the subject of 17 lessons.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When studying the Bible, there are two ways to approach the Scriptures. \u00a0Of course, one method is almost always preferred over the other metod by most teachers. \u00a0Yet, there is perhaps no best way to teach God&#8217;s Word. \u00a0 Each one has its strengths and its weaknesses.
