{"id":2889,"date":"2012-07-21T09:07:50","date_gmt":"2012-07-21T13:07:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/simplelife\/?p=2889"},"modified":"2012-07-21T09:21:50","modified_gmt":"2012-07-21T13:21:50","slug":"learning-to-learn-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/simplelife\/2012\/07\/learning-to-learn-part-1.html","title":{"rendered":"Learning to learn&#8211;Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2012\/07\/learning-music.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"learning music\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2012\/07\/learning-music.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"91\" \/><\/a>Last week we started learning new music at The Special Gathering Vero and Melbourne\u00a0choirs.\u00a0\u00a0 I am the director of three of\u00a0the six choirs at Special Gathering, a ministry within the intellectual disability community.\u00a0 Our choirs sing in local churches and during our chapel services.\u00a0 Our purpose in traveling to other congregations is to educate the church to the spiritual needs of people who are mentally challenged.<\/p>\n<p>Trying to keep the choirs more interested in newer\u00a0music, I often let them choose the new songs.\u00a0 Because our members memorize the music, it takes a bit longer to teach them the words and melody.\u00a0 Therefore I begin about three or four months before they will preform the songs.\u00a0\u00a0This new music\u00a0contains\u00a0the songs we\u2019ll be singing in the summer and fall.<\/p>\n<p>During the time we were going over the new selections, Anna kept wandering away in her mind.\u00a0 Lucy and Nancy\u00a0were nodding off.\u00a0 Only Sheila was\u00a0awake and perky during the\u00a0half hour\u00a0that we were rehearsing the new numbers.\u00a0\u00a0After we had sung the new pieces once, maybe twice, we jumped into the older music that we knew.\u00a0 Immediately, Anna was centered.
