{"id":2759,"date":"2012-06-23T01:35:01","date_gmt":"2012-06-23T05:35:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/simplelife\/?p=2759"},"modified":"2012-06-22T13:14:14","modified_gmt":"2012-06-22T17:14:14","slug":"learning-the-language-of-love","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/simplelife\/2012\/06\/learning-the-language-of-love.html","title":{"rendered":"Learning the language of love"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/simplelife\/files\/2012\/06\/advocacy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-2760\" title=\"advocacy\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2012\/06\/advocacy-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"158\" \/><\/a>Often people with intellectual disabilities may have a language barrier. \u00a0Even though she is high functioning and can do almost any job, Teena&#8217;s language is muddled and confused. \u00a0She speaks her word-phrases backwards. \u00a0For most of her life, she has remained mutely silent because she understands that people can&#8217;t always interpret the twisted way her words flow from her brain into her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, in the past year, because of her love for the Lord, Teena has been released from her chains of fear and doubt and she now communicates with the people she trusts, especially during the discussions in her Bible class. \u00a0Teena is a leader at The Special Gathering which is ministry within the mentally challenged community. \u00a0Our mission is evangelism and discipleship.<\/p>\n<p>The Arc is a national organization that provides various services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. \u00a0Yesterday, as I visited the Wahiawa Arc, I saw in Renee Subee, the manager, and her staff, the language of love at work. &#8220;Jon,&#8221; Renee encouraged one of the consumers, &#8220;show us your birds.&#8221; \u00a0Jon went to his box and pulled out a maticulously and beautifully cut paper hawk. \u00a0&#8220;Jon does these birds without a pattern. \u00a0They are all cut freehand.&#8221; \u00a0Then taking the bird, he positioned it around his fingers and caused the bird to fly. \u00a0The grace of his large gentle fingers made you see the hawk in graceful flight. \u00a0&#8220;We&#8217;ve tried to make the birds fly as Jon does; but we can&#8217;t do it. \u00a0He is an artist,&#8221; Renee bragged.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/simplelife\/files\/2012\/06\/paper-bird.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2761 alignright\" title=\"paper bird\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2012\/06\/paper-bird-300x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"108\" height=\"95\" \/><\/a>Then Jon took the bird. \u00a0He gave it to Renee and motioned for her to keep it. \u00a0Renee clutched it to her heart. \u00a0&#8220;For me?
