{"id":2419,"date":"2012-01-20T09:58:27","date_gmt":"2012-01-20T14:58:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/simplelife\/?p=2419"},"modified":"2012-01-20T09:58:27","modified_gmt":"2012-01-20T14:58:27","slug":"old-friends-new-visions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/simplelife\/2012\/01\/old-friends-new-visions.html","title":{"rendered":"Old friends, new visions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/specialgathering.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/01\/spg-choir.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/specialgathering.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/01\/spg-choir.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a>The choir sang and then I spoke. \u00a0As I shared our missions vision to the group at\u00a0<a title=\"Trinity Presbyterian Church, Satellite Beach, FL \" href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitypres.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Trinity Presbyterian Church in Satellite Beach<\/a>, I scanned the people&#8217;s faces and my eyes screamed to a halt when I saw her face. \u00a0&#8220;My good friend, Carol, was sitting in the audience. \u00a0She smiled as she realized that I had recognized her. \u00a0Though, it&#8217;s probably been 10 years, it was the same smile and the same kindred that was sparked as I continued my presentation.<\/p>\n<p>There is perhaps nothing better than seeing the face or hearing the voice of an old friend. \u00a0Yesterday, Mia called. \u00a0Even though my phone clues me into the person calling, I waited until she responded to my greeting before I called her name. \u00a0It makes her giggle that I &#8220;recognize&#8221; who she is. \u00a0Mia is a Special Gathering member who has attended off and on for more than 20 years. \u00a0She was a young girl of 14 or 15 when I first met her and now she is an adult with two teenage children.<\/p>\n<p>High functioning and dual diagnosed with mental health issues, Mia began smoking cigarettes when she was first institutionalized for bipolar disorder. \u00a0Now, she has ruined her lungs. \u00a0At times, she cannot breathe because of\u00a0COPD. \u00a0We laughed and talked for about 5 minutes. \u00a0&#8220;Please, pray for me,&#8221; she said before we hung up the phones. \u00a0She promised to come to Special Gathering on Sunday but I no longer expect for her to attend, even when her deep desire is to be there.<\/p>\n<p>This morning as I texted Carol hoping we could meet for lunch, I was struck by the fact that my love for Mia and my love for Carol are the same. \u00a0Mia isn&#8217;t a &#8220;special needs project.&#8221; \u00a0She is my good and long-time friend who often calls for prayer because she loves me as much as I love her.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/specialgathering.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/01\/carlos-and-offering.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/specialgathering.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/01\/carlos-and-offering.jpg?w=245\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>I talk often with\u00a0<a title=\"South Carolina Special Gathering\" href=\"http:\/\/nbbd.com\/npr\/specialgathering\/walterboro.html\" target=\"_blank\">Ferne\u00a0Brandt, our area director of The South Carolina Special Gathering<\/a>. \u00a0I&#8217;m happy that I&#8217;ve finally gotten to know most of her core membership because I can never tell whether she is speaking about her members or her volunteers. \u00a0The respect and admiration regarding the friendship they share isn&#8217;t different.<\/p>\n<p>When there is genuine friendship, something miraculous happens. \u00a0We not only share memories of the past but joy of the present and anticipation for a glorious future. \u00a0When I scanned the room at Trinity Presbyterian, it wasn&#8217;t simply the joy of seeing an old friend that ignited my spirit but her smile said, &#8220;You are doing good.
