{"id":2178,"date":"2011-11-21T01:04:04","date_gmt":"2011-11-21T06:04:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/simplelife\/?p=2178"},"modified":"2011-11-21T11:18:40","modified_gmt":"2011-11-21T16:18:40","slug":"a-thanksgiving-value-learning-to-wait","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/simplelife\/2011\/11\/a-thanksgiving-value-learning-to-wait.html","title":{"rendered":"A Thanksgiving value&#8211;Learning to wait"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I try hard to not eat sugar all week until Friday. \u00a0Of course, I know that sugar and fructose is hidden in many pre-prepared foods but I TRY to eliminate it until Friday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/simplelife\/files\/2011\/11\/a-jelly-beans.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2179 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2011\/11\/a-jelly-beans-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>I have to admit that it is hard. \u00a0Ordering an unsweetened iced tea when others are having cheese cake or ice cream is brutal. \u00a0But when my body began to tell me that I had a sugar problem I tried to listen and respond.<\/p>\n<p>Waiting for Friday represents hard work to me. \u00a0I find that it&#8217;s the same with the Lord. \u00a0God wants to give us good things but he often makes us wait for them. \u00a0In one of my most <strong>unfavorite<\/strong> verses \u00a0Acts 1:7,<em> Jesus said to them,\u00a0&#8220;The Father is the only One who has the authority to decide dates and times. These things are not for you to know.&#8221; \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Of course, we remember the story of David and Saul. \u00a0Saul was king but God had rejected him and anointed David. \u00a0After David figured out God&#8217;s plan, he tried repeatedly to kill David.<\/p>\n<p>Saul even took his entire army out to find David. \u00a0But as the Lord often works,\u00a0David and his army found Saul and his army first. When David found them, Saul was asleep. \u00a0David was given the perfect opportunity kill the king who no longer pleased God. \u00a0But David did not kill Saul.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/simplelife\/files\/2011\/11\/a-waiting-room.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2180\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2011\/11\/a-waiting-room-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>David was willing to wait because he understood that God had made Saul king and God had not stopped Saul&#8217;s reign. \u00a0Saul was still king. \u00a0David showed respect for Saul and for God by showing restraint and allowing Saul to live. \u00a0As David found out, waiting for God to do good things in our lives can be painfully hard.<\/p>\n<p>However, God has used David&#8217;s example to teach us that God expects us to wait on him to make good things happen. \u00a0Sometimes, it seems that the places in our pathway and easy way out. \u00a0This does make waiting especially hard.<\/p>\n<p>I have to be honest, given David&#8217;s circumstances, I don&#8217;t know that I would&#8217;ve found the grace to wait on God. \u00a0Too often, I try to make things happen in my life.<\/p>\n<p>Like David, however, there are some things we can do when we are waiting on the Lord.<\/p>\n<p>1) \u00a0 I can pray.<\/p>\n<p>2) \u00a0I can daily remind myself of God\u2019s promises to me.<\/p>\n<p>3) \u00a0 I should keep busy doing good while waiting. \u00a0This exercise will prepare me for the future plans God had promised.<\/p>\n<p>4) \u00a0I can continue to believe that God will do what he has promised.<\/p>\n<p>It is a fact that God wants to do good things for us but he will make us wait for the good things to happen. \u00a0This week we are all preparing for Thanksgiving. \u00a0Our hearts are primed to look for things for which we are thankful. \u00a0Perhaps one of the things we should be most thankful is that God doesn&#8217;t give us everything the moment we ask for it. \u00a0He allows us to wait for his working in our hearts and in the hearts and lives of others.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I try hard to not eat sugar all week until Friday. \u00a0Of course, I know that sugar and fructose is hidden in many pre-prepared foods but I TRY to eliminate it until Friday.
