{"id":2052,"date":"2011-11-07T01:00:13","date_gmt":"2011-11-07T06:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/simplelife\/?p=2052"},"modified":"2011-11-04T06:28:53","modified_gmt":"2011-11-04T10:28:53","slug":"renewing-the-mind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/simplelife\/2011\/11\/renewing-the-mind.html","title":{"rendered":"Renewing the Mind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We first moved to Brevard County more than forty years ago. \u00a0My husband and I joined a small church with a missions outreach.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/specialgathering.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/twins.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/specialgathering.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/twins.jpg?w=2\" alt=\"\" width=\"2\" height=\"1\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/specialgathering.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/twins1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/specialgathering.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/twins1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"172\" height=\"113\" \/><\/a>As a local missions project, the women of the\u00a0church were going to a nearby town to &#8220;pattern&#8221; a young boy born with the umbilical chord wrapped around his neck.\u00a0 \u00a0This child was one of twins and the family was known in the community as devout Christians.<\/p>\n<p>Because I was pregnant and had a small child myself, I was never able to work into my schedule a time that I could go and help.\u00a0 But for years I prayed for and wondered what happened to the family.\u00a0 More than twenty years later, I found out.\u00a0 I met the twins.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/specialgathering.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/gather.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/specialgathering.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/gather.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"209\" height=\"176\" \/><\/a>Now they are adult men.\u00a0 Richard Stimson, executive director and founder of The Special Gathering, a ministry within the mentally challenged community,\u00a0was the twin born without brain damage.\u00a0 His brother had been the child who had been patterned.<\/p>\n<p>The method was eventually dropped because there was a great deal of controversy about the results of patterning and\u00a0procedures involved\u00a0in patterning.\u00a0 Professionals believed that\u00a0patterning only worked because there are such an intensive effort demanded by the patterning process and that no real results were acquires.\u00a0 However, Stimson says that the family saw significant changes in his brother during the time when people were coming into their home and helping to perform the rituals of crawling and other patterns of activity our brains seem to perform instinctively for us.<\/p>\n<p>The scriptures speak of the need to renew our minds.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve always known that this was a reference to purifying our thought patterns and I still believe that.\u00a0 However, new educational break throughs have me thinking.<\/p>\n<p>For most of the years scientists have been studying the mind, it has been thought and taught that you cannot rejuvenate brain cells.\u00a0 Therefore, when you lose brain cells&#8211;and the accompanying abilities that are governed by those cells&#8211;you can never recover them.\u00a0 However, recent\u00a0break throughs in methods and equipment used to study the brain\u00a0have revealed that this is not true.\u00a0 There is a new term called the plasticity of the brain.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/specialgathering.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/pet-scan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/specialgathering.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/pet-scan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"220\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>New methods of rejuvenating the brain which are peculiarly like the patterning methods are being developed.\u00a0 It is being used mainly with recent stroke and Alzheimer&#8217;s patients.\u00a0 Yet, the results are amazing. \u00a0In fact, this is good news for all of us. \u00a0Whether we desire to read faster, learn to play a musical instrument or develop better health and hygiene habits, we are seeing through this new treatment of a debilitating disease, that our brains can renew themselves, if we demand from it new learning.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, I have heard nothing about using these methods to help the mentally challenged community.\u00a0 Doesn&#8217;t this once again amplify the need for the world to remember and see this cloistered, sub-culture?<\/p>\n<p>Should the Church be in the forefront of inquiring about the effectiveness of these new breakthroughs and their application within the mentally challenged community?\u00a0 I hope so.\u00a0 Or will this silent, unseen, unheard minority once again be ignored in another wake of discrimination.\u00a0 Oh, God I pray this will not be.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We first moved to Brevard County more than forty years ago. \u00a0My husband and I joined a small church with a missions outreach.
