{"id":1988,"date":"2011-10-28T01:00:44","date_gmt":"2011-10-28T05:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/simplelife\/?p=1988"},"modified":"2011-10-28T06:45:33","modified_gmt":"2011-10-28T10:45:33","slug":"marbles-and-a-childs-toy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/simplelife\/2011\/10\/marbles-and-a-childs-toy.html","title":{"rendered":"Marbles and a child&#8217;s toy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, I found a doll that I received at Christmas when I was in the fourth or fifth grade. \u00a0It was a &#8220;walking doll,&#8221; stuck back in a closet, I barely use. \u00a0These specialty dolls would walk if you held their hand and moved them in exactly the right way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/simplelife\/files\/2011\/10\/walkdolls.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2006\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2011\/10\/walkdolls-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Walking dolls were the rage that year and every little girl got one. \u00a0Even though I was getting too old for dolls, I love it and I&#8217;ve kept it in the top of a closet for about 55 years. \u00a0She is a mess and certainly won&#8217;t ever be a sell-able item in years to come.<\/p>\n<p>A good friend collected marbles all during his childhood. \u00a0Today, they are valuable collectibles. \u00a0However, his parents decided that these toys belonged to them&#8211;not him. \u00a0In fact, without consulting him, they gave the marble treasure to his sister.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2008\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2008\" style=\"width: 295px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2011\/10\/all-saints-day-costumes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2008\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2011\/10\/all-saints-day-costumes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"295\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2008\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">All Saints&#039; Day costumes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>All of us have special memories from our childhood. \u00a0Some are gifts and toys. \u00a0Most of them revolve about special days and events. \u00a0For me Halloween was one of those. \u00a0I grew up in the days that parents didn&#8217;t buy costumes. \u00a0All the children in the neighborhood got together and we made our own dress-up attire. \u00a0The guys wore their baseball uniforms or wore an eye batch and their older sister&#8217;s white blouse with their dad&#8217;s over-sized pants and became pirates. \u00a0The less creative girls, like me, were usually gypsies.<\/p>\n<p>The candy was the super star of the day. \u00a0We cared little about what the day meant. \u00a0Yet, we loved getting that candy from neighbors. \u00a0By the time my children were at the trick-or-treat stage, creepy crawlers had moved onto the scenes because parents had started to manage the day and the event. \u00a0One home in our neighborhood was decorated. \u00a0 Sears always had costume pajamas that I purchased for the children. \u00a0My daughter was always an angel.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2007\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2007\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2011\/10\/all-saints-day.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2007 \" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2011\/10\/all-saints-day.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2007\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">All Saints&#039; Day light<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In reality, Halloween is \u00a0 transliteration of the two words All Hallowed Eve or Holy Eve. \u00a0October 31 is the day before one of the most holy days of the Christian calendar, All Saints Day. On November 1, the church in the sixth century took the day to remember saints who have lived and died to insure the spread of the good news of Christ&#8217;s death and God&#8217;s redeeming love.<\/p>\n<p>I am often asked what I think about Halloween. \u00a0In short, I don&#8217;t celebrate the day. \u00a0However, I hate that playing with evil and a glorification of Satan has overtaken a holy time of remembrance. \u00a0Goulds and skeletons which celebrate death and slaughter are freely greeted. \u00a0Yet, the holy Babe who was laid in a manger and Holy Week are being outlawed. \u00a0After all, remembering God&#8217;s sacrificial love is much more dangerous to society than blatant evil.<\/p>\n<p>Could it be that the Church has given away another holy time? \u00a0How many of us celebrate November 1, All Saints Day? \u00a0Wouldn&#8217;t a renewal of this holiday by the Church at least off set for Christians a holiday gone bad?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, I found a doll that I received at Christmas when I was in the fourth or fifth grade. \u00a0It was a &#8220;walking doll,&#8221; stuck back in a closet, I barely use. \u00a0These specialty dolls would walk if you held their hand and moved them in exactly the right way.
