{"id":1739,"date":"2011-09-29T01:00:01","date_gmt":"2011-09-29T05:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/simplelife\/?p=1739"},"modified":"2011-09-28T21:07:13","modified_gmt":"2011-09-29T01:07:13","slug":"riders-on-the-storm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/simplelife\/2011\/09\/riders-on-the-storm.html","title":{"rendered":"Riders on the storm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The song, &#8220;Riders on the Storm,&#8221; recorded in 1971 by the Doors invaded my mind this morning. \u00a0Perhaps I&#8217;m the only person in the US who can&#8217;t remember ever hearing this song.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/simplelife\/files\/2011\/09\/StormSurge.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1742\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2011\/09\/StormSurge-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>My curiosity peaked by the title, I had to look up the lyrics. \u00a0Like many songs, some of the lyrics didn&#8217;t make sense to me. \u00a0However, the chorus is stunningly applicable to what happened a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>Riders on the storm<br \/>\nRiders on the storm<br \/>\nInto this house we&#8217;re born<br \/>\nInto this world we&#8217;re thrown<br \/>\nLike a dog without a bone<br \/>\nAn actor out alone<br \/>\nRiders on the storm<\/p>\n<p>There is such amazing hope and despair coupled in these lyrics that my imagination was captured. \u00a0The songwriter says, we are riders on the storm. \u00a0Not tossed or turned in the storm but caught up riding above the storms of life. \u00a0However, once the hope is given, there is great despair because we are born to be thrown alone and lost.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2011\/09\/breaking-into-home1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1747\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2011\/09\/breaking-into-home1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"170\" height=\"241\" \/><\/a>One year ago today, my husband fell and broke his hip and leg. \u00a0He came home from an extended stay in the hospital and rehab centers on February 14, 2011 and died May 10. \u00a0I was only 10 feet from him when he fell; but we were in different rooms. \u00a0I bust through the door to find him sitting on the shower floor writhing in pain. \u00a0I knew he had broken his hip. \u00a0My first thoughts were o<em>ur lives just radically changed<\/em>. \u00a0Nevertheless, I had no idea how much change had stolen through our doorway.<\/p>\n<p>From that moment, together he and I became riders on the storm, embracing and repelling the future with all our strength. \u00a0We laughed and cried in the same breath. \u00a0As his dementia accelerated, each moment became a bitter\/sweet memory that I knew he would forget as soon as the hour passed. \u00a0I felt bitterly alone; yet surprisingly embraced second by second by Frank, our family and friends. \u00a0God&#8217;s wisdom was clearly working in our lives while the mystery of tomorrow became more and more clouded.<\/p>\n<p>Often, God uses the secular to teach us His truths. \u00a0Today, I&#8217;m grateful to the Doors for their prophetic recording. \u00a0I ask God to bless them abundantly by leading them to know him through His Son, Jesus their Savior and Lord.<\/p>\n<p>What about you? \u00a0Has there be one song&#8211;perhaps even a secular song&#8211;that God has used to help you through difficult circumstances?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The song, &#8220;Riders on the Storm,&#8221; recorded in 1971 by the Doors invaded my mind this morning. \u00a0Perhaps I&#8217;m the only person in the US who can&#8217;t remember ever hearing this song.
