{"id":64,"date":"2009-07-03T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-07-03T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/scienceandthesacred\/2009\/07\/calling-all-ants.html"},"modified":"2014-05-19T09:16:23","modified_gmt":"2014-05-19T13:16:23","slug":"calling-all-ants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/scienceandthesacred\/2009\/07\/calling-all-ants.html","title":{"rendered":"Calling All Ants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"ant_portrait.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/202\/import\/ant_portrait.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px;text-align: center\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" \/><\/span> <\/p>\n<div align=\"right\"><b>Source: <\/b>binux \/ Flickr \/ All Rights Reserved<\/p>\n<div align=\"left\">As a boy, Sir John Lubbock helped none other than Charles Darwin, his next-door neighbor, to perform experiments.&nbsp; As an adult, Sir John conducted biological experiments of his own.&nbsp; In the 1870s, he wanted to find out whether ants communicated with sounds.&nbsp; His method?&nbsp; In his own words, &#8220;I thought I would try the telephone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sir John connected two telephones and held one over each of two different ant nests.&nbsp; He then disturbed one nest and waited to see if the sound of the frightened ants in one nest would alert the ants in the other.&nbsp; The other ants paid no notice.&nbsp; Thus, Sir John concluded that ants do not use sounds to communicate.<\/p>\n<p>He was wrong.&nbsp; We now know that ants of many species have a &#8220;stridulatory organ&#8221;&#8211; a rigid area which when rubbed makes a distinctive squeak.&nbsp; While we can hear it, the noise produced by these organs serves a variety of purposes for the ants.&nbsp; Some use the noises to call for help when they&#8217;re in trouble.&nbsp; Others use it to alert the nest to a good find of food.&nbsp; One study found that playing the stridulating sound of a queen ant through a loudspeaker caused ants to protect the speaker as if it were a queen.<\/p>\n<p>What did Sir John Lubbock do wrong?&nbsp; His only real problem was that he lacked of technology and modern scientific knowledge to answer his question.&nbsp; His story teaches us a valuable lesson about science and understanding the nature of the world around us.&nbsp; While some questions may seem unanswerable at the time, this does not mean we will never know the answers or understand how things work.&nbsp; As science continues to advance, we can better understand the natural mechanisms behind the mysterious questions we now have.<\/p>\n<p>To read more about Sir John Lubbock&#8217;s experiments, be sure to read <a href=\"http:\/\/judson.blogs.nytimes.com\/2009\/06\/30\/operator-can-you-put-me-through-to-ant-nest-251\/?ref=science\">&#8220;Operator?
