I was driving down that road and saw a billboard that said “Approval Patrol”\u00a0on a picture of a few people looking very serious.\u00a0 It was a funny thought I had,\u00a0thinking of how we sometimes live like there actually is an official Approval Patrol.<\/p>\n
Every day we do wonder what others will think of many different subjects of us.\u00a0 We all want to fit in, belong, be loved, accepted, understood, and approved of.\u00a0\u00a0I’m now picturing my favorite show Project Runway<\/em>.\u00a0 Right now the Project Runway: All Stars<\/em>\u00a0is\u00a0airing and I love Georgina\u00a0Chapman, one of the judges on there.\u00a0 She’s one of the designers of Marchesa, the fashion label with dreamy gowns you see on the red carpet of the award shows.\u00a0 She is so goddess.\u00a0 She makes me want to die my hair back to my natural dark brown color and become British.\u00a0 She is so cool, that even when she doesn’t like a design, she says it with class and like it’s wrapped up in a compliment.\u00a0 I imagine my Approval Patrol, or committee, or panel of judges would have a perfect beauty like her on it.\u00a0 That\u00a0stellar lady on the Approval\u00a0Patrol would always look impeccably dressed and sport the latest styles, but her children would be getting trophies and never say bad words.<\/p>\n I used to LIVE for the approval of others.\u00a0 It often takes us at least to our 30’s to realize that committee of folks we are seeking a gold star from will never all agree on our rightness or our value.\u00a0 Other people’s opinions will always vary and especially about us, often dependent on\u00a0whether we are doing\u00a0things for them or following the way of living that\u00a0they do.\u00a0 Like they say things are in “the court of public opinion,” well there’s such a thing as “prison of public opinion.”\u00a0 And often the people we cared who approved of us in our 20’s aren’t around for our 30’s anyway.<\/p>\n How would life be different of we truly didn’t care what others thought.\u00a0 That is total freedom.\u00a0 Just think of all the possibilities for\u00a0our lives if there were\u00a0no opinions?\u00a0 Would we paint?\u00a0 Would we sing on stage?\u00a0 Would we write books?\u00a0 What would we wear?\u00a0 What would we say?\u00a0 What would we say?\u00a0 Who would we be without the opinion of\u00a0others?\u00a0 What would we drive?\u00a0 How would we decorate out homes?\u00a0 Would we\u00a0all have houses all crazy cool colors?\u00a0 How many pink houses would there be?\u00a0\u00a0How often would we dance?\u00a0 Would people dance at weddings without needing any booze to\u00a0allow them to let go of inhibitions?\u00a0\u00a0Would people wear costumes like just on a random day, not just Halloween, but like every day was like a parade.\u00a0 Sounds like heaven to me.\u00a0 Freedom and costumes are the best.\u00a0 No matter what we’d do, all that mattered is that we felt good about it and not how it looked to others or was perceived.\u00a0 There are actually people who live like that.<\/p>\n Next time you go to make a decision,\u00a0think about what factors you are using to figure it out.\u00a0 Are other people’s opinions being hypothesized or used in the equation?\u00a0 What if you just made a choice based on your own intuition?\u00a0 Hmm…what a concept?<\/p>\n The Approval Patrol will\u00a0just find someone else.\u00a0 They always do.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" I was driving down that road and saw a billboard that said “Approval Patrol”\u00a0on a picture of a few people looking very serious.\u00a0 It was a funny thought I had,\u00a0thinking of how we sometimes live like there actually is an official Approval Patrol.
