That<br \/>\nwould be the AG race in Connecticut, in which GOP candidate Martha Dean<br \/>\nis running on a <a href=\"http:\/\/deanag2010.com\/marthas-platform\/\">platform<\/a> of Freedom, Faith, and Fortune. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"corner-2010e-488x134.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.spiritual-politics.org\/corner-2010e-488x134.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"text-align: center;margin: 0pt auto 20px\" width=\"488\" height=\"134\" \/>Actually, I&#8217;d pretty much forgotten about Martha since I <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/religionandpubliclife\/2010\/08\/martha-dean-judeo-christian-for-ct-ag.html\">wrote about her<\/a><br \/>\nback in August. But yesterday WNPR&#8217;s Colin McEnroe wanted to fold her<br \/>\ninto a discussion of religion and politics in this election cycle, so it<br \/>\nbehooved me to check and see how that platform is working out for her.<\/p>\n<p>The only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctnewsjunkie.com\/ctnj.php\/archives\/entry\/underticket_polled\/\">public polling available<\/a><br \/>\nof the state&#8217;s underticket races shows her trailing her Democratic<br \/>\nrival, George Jepson, 28 to 40 percent. A couple of days ago, CT New<br \/>\nJunky&#8217;s Susan Bigelow <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctnewsjunkie.com\/ctnj.php\/archives\/entry\/one_corner_four_elections\/\">snickered<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This year&#8217;s political sign crop is an interesting one. Martha Dean&#8217;s<br \/>\nsign is prominent this year, and her puzzling &#8220;Freedom, Faith, Fortune&#8221;<br \/>\nslogan is visible. Her website&#8217;s explanation of the last word did little<br \/>\nto clear things up; apparently the word &#8220;prosperity&#8221; is way too<br \/>\nsocialist for Martha. Really. Fortunately for Connecticut, the placement<br \/>\nof her sign (and the pure insanity of her campaign) pretty much assures<br \/>\nher defeat.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As Peter De Vries put it in <i>Slouching Towards Kalamazoo<\/i>, &#8220;About the only thing<i><em> <\/em><\/i>that&#8217;s ever been converted in Connecticut<em><\/em> is a barn.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I know all of you have been waiting with bated breath for an update on how the country&#8217;s only Prosperity Gospel campaign has been going. After teaching at Harvard in the Department of History and Literature for three years, he became editor of the Boston Review. In 1987 he joined the staff of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, where he worked variously as a reporter, editorial writer and columnist. In 1996 he became the founding director of the Leonard E. Greenberg Center for the Study of Religion in Public Life at Trinity College and in 1998 founding editor of Religion in the News, a magazine published by the Center that examines how the news media handle religious subject matter. In 2005, he was named director of the Trinity College Program on Public Values, comprising both the Greenberg Center and a new Institute for the Study of Secularism in Society and Culture directed by Barry Kosmin. In 2007, he became Professor of Religion in Public Life at the College. Professor Silk is the author of Spiritual Politics: Religion and America Since World War II and Unsecular Media: Making News of Religion in America. He is co-editor of Religion by Region, an eight-volume series on religion and public life in the United States, and co-author of The American Establishment, Making Capitalism Work, and One Nation Divisible: How Regional Religious Differences Shape American Politics.
