The latest Pew survey<\/a>
\non attitudes about same-sex marriage shows a more striking shift than
\nindicated by the Pew Forum’s headline: “Support for Same-Sex Marriage
\nEdges Upward.” Yes, support edged up four percentage points over last
\nyear, from 38 percent to 42 percent. And opposition edged down five
\npoints, from 53 percent to 48 percent. In other words, the gap between
\nsupporters and opponents was more than halved, shrinking from 15 points
\nto six. Now, for the first time, less than a majority of Americans
\noppose SSM. That’s significant news.<\/p>\n

Among regions of the country, only the South now opposes SSM, by a
\nfull 20 points. Among religious groups, only white evangelicals and
\nblack Protestants are significantly opposed. (Mormons doubtless are as
\nwell, but the survey does not register them.) Democrats are in favor and
\nthis year, in a 12-point turnaround, so are Independents (by a single
\npoint). Republicans remain a remote outlier, though even among them
\nsupport has edged up from 19 percent to 24 percent.<\/p>\n

All this has taken place during a period of apparent conservative
\nresurgence. No wonder the GOP and its Tea Party allies are keeping mum

Professor Silk is the author of Spiritual Politics: Religion and America Since World War II and Unsecular Media: Making News of Religion in America. He is co-editor of Religion by Region, an eight-volume series on religion and public life in the United States, and co-author of The American Establishment, Making Capitalism Work, and One Nation Divisible: How Regional Religious Differences Shape American Politics.
