Planned Parenthood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/135\/2011\/05\/mdaniels.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-419\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/135\/2011\/05\/mdaniels.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"171\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s possible that Indiana guv Mitch Daniels is a few inches farther  away from running for the GOP presidential nomination after last night&#8217;s  take-out of Osama Bin Laden, but here&#8217;s what the <em>New York Times <\/em>had from him in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/05\/01\/us\/politics\/01republicans.html?scp=2&amp;sq=Daniels%20Romney&amp;st=cse\">yesterday&#8217;s paper<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019m getting letters from all over the damn country, and some of them  are pretty moving,\u201d Mr. Daniels said in an interview last week at the  Capitol in Indianapolis, where his friends believe he is inching closer  to exploring a candidacy. He added, \u201cIt can\u2019t help but affect you.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a short, balding, unknown 61-year-old intellectual sort of guy  (and believe me, it takes one to know one), you&#8217;ve got to be pretty  overwhelmed by letters from all over urging you to run for the most  powerful job in the world. So why not <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/0411\/53954.html\">declare an end<\/a> to your self-proclaimed truce on social issues? If it&#8217;s only Planned  Parenthood that&#8217;s standing between you and the Oval Office, let&#8217;s go to  war!<\/p>\n<p>Let there be no doubt: No one gets to run for president on the GOP  ticket without toeing the abortion line of the moment. After teaching at Harvard in the Department of History and Literature for three years, he became editor of the Boston Review. In 1987 he joined the staff of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, where he worked variously as a reporter, editorial writer and columnist. In 1996 he became the founding director of the Leonard E. Greenberg Center for the Study of Religion in Public Life at Trinity College and in 1998 founding editor of Religion in the News, a magazine published by the Center that examines how the news media handle religious subject matter. In 2005, he was named director of the Trinity College Program on Public Values, comprising both the Greenberg Center and a new Institute for the Study of Secularism in Society and Culture directed by Barry Kosmin. In 2007, he became Professor of Religion in Public Life at the College. Professor Silk is the author of Spiritual Politics: Religion and America Since World War II and Unsecular Media: Making News of Religion in America. He is co-editor of Religion by Region, an eight-volume series on religion and public life in the United States, and co-author of The American Establishment, Making Capitalism Work, and One Nation Divisible: How Regional Religious Differences Shape American Politics.
