The former are more in favor of<br \/>\nsame-sex marriage than any other ethno-religious group in the survey;<br \/>\nthe former are more opposed. (That&#8217;s Catholics 57-38 in favor versus<br \/>\nProtestants 73-22 opposed.) The correlation that&#8217;s caught most attention<br \/>\nis the disproportionately high number of Latino Catholics (41 percent)<br \/>\nwho think of God as an impersonal force. Although we&#8217;re unfortunately<br \/>\nnot given a number for Latino Protestants, we are meant to assume that<br \/>\nmost of them regard God &#8220;as a person with whom one can have a<br \/>\nrelationship.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t dispute the Catholic number, but it makes no sense to me as an<br \/>\nexplanation. Latino Catholicism is, by all accounts, rich in personal<br \/>\nconnection&#8211;to the Virgin Mary and other saints, for example. I&#8217;d<br \/>\nsuggest that for Latino Protestants&#8211;as for evangelicals<br \/>\ngenerally&#8211;same-sex marriage is a major issue, in effect a defining<br \/>\nelement of their faith. Professor Silk is the author of Spiritual Politics: Religion and America Since World War II and Unsecular Media: Making News of Religion in America. He is co-editor of Religion by Region, an eight-volume series on religion and public life in the United States, and co-author of The American Establishment, Making Capitalism Work, and One Nation Divisible: How Regional Religious Differences Shape American Politics.
