Daniels, it turns out, is half Syrian, his paternal  grandparents having immigrated from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daralhayat.com\/portalarticlendah\/207153\">near Homs<\/a> early in the last century.They were Christians&#8211;he&#8217;s Presbyterian&#8211;but no doubt (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/news\/politics\/war_room\/2011\/04\/19\/mitch_daniels_secret_arab\/\">heh<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com\/2011\/04\/mitch-daniels-to-be-feted-by-arab-american-institute.php\">heh<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.democraticunderground.com\/discuss\/duboard.php?az=view_all&amp;address=433x656751\">heh<\/a>)  his ethnic origin will make this most presentable of undeclared  Republican presidential candidates persona non grata to the Islamophobes  of the GOP.<\/p>\n<p>Really? So far as I can tell, there have been no  overt expressions of concern about Daniels&#8217; Arab antecedents on the  right. But perhaps something of the sort can be read between the lines  of anti-Daniels chatter by the neo-con likes of <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2011\/02\/23\/mark-levin-to-indiana-gov-mitch-daniels-youre-not-presidential\/\">Mark Levin<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/right-turn\/2011\/02\/danielss_problems_not_limited.html\">Jennifer Rubin<\/a>, both of whom have been called out by commenters as Jews bringing some anti-Arab bias to the table.<\/p>\n<p>Daniels has, most famously this election cycle, run afoul of social conservatives by <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ac\/20110314\/pl_ac\/8056060_mitch_daniels_truce_on_social_issues_suggests_slight_shift_in_gop\">proposing a &#8220;truce&#8221;<\/a> on social issues. And he&#8217;s lately proved himself <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indystar.com\/article\/20110413\/NEWS05\/104130345\/1001\/Daniels-Immigration-bill-should-focus-employers?odyssey=nav%7Chead\">soft on immigration<\/a>. There&#8217;s no question that AAI&#8211;a creature of Democrat James Zogby&#8211;is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaiusa.org\/dr-zogby\/entry\/arabs-give-neo-cons-a-reality-check\/\">no friend<\/a> of the neo-cons. Is its Halaby Award winner also squishy on Israel-Palestine? Professor Silk is the author of Spiritual Politics: Religion and America Since World War II and Unsecular Media: Making News of Religion in America. He is co-editor of Religion by Region, an eight-volume series on religion and public life in the United States, and co-author of The American Establishment, Making Capitalism Work, and One Nation Divisible: How Regional Religious Differences Shape American Politics.
