Never mind that Vatican II settled this half a century ago with <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/hist_councils\/ii_vatican_council\/documents\/vat-ii_decl_19651028_nostra-aetate_en.html\">Nostra Aetate<\/a><\/i>. As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americamagazine.org\/blog\/entry.cfm?blog_id=2&amp;entry_id=3953\">Jim Martin<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/ncronline.org\/blogs\/distinctly-catholic\/benedict-jews\">Michael Sean Winters<\/a><br \/>\namong others contend, there are good reasons for the pope&#8211;this<br \/>\npope&#8211;to re-articulate the position in convenient narrative form for a<br \/>\nnew generation. And good of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adl.org\/PresRele\/VaticanJewish_96\/5988_96.htm\">ADL<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wiesenthal.com\/site\/apps\/nlnet\/content2.aspx?c=lsKWLbPJLnF&amp;b=4441467&amp;ct=9146873\">Wiesenthal Center <\/a>to make gracious acknowledgement. And if it all sets the teeth of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Society_of_St._Pius_X\">SSPX<\/a>-Men on edge, so much the better.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, and yet, the historian in me cannot resist picking a bone&#8211;the<br \/>\nbone of the Gospel of John, which has stuck in craw of good<br \/>\nJewish-Christian relations lo these many centuries. Here&#8217;s what Pope B<br \/>\nhas to say about its apparent targeting of my kind.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now we must ask: who exactly were Jesus&#8217; accusers?&nbsp; Who insisted that he<br \/>\nbe condemned to death?&nbsp; We must take note of the different answers that<br \/>\nthe Gospels give to this question.&nbsp; According to John it was simply<br \/>\n&#8220;the Jews&#8221;.&nbsp; But John&#8217;s use of this expression does not in any way<br \/>\nindicate &#8211; as the modern reader might suppose &#8211; the people of Israel in<br \/>\ngeneral, even less is it &#8220;racist&#8221; in character.&nbsp; After all, John himself<br \/>\nwas ethnically a Jew, as were Jesus and all his followers.&nbsp; The entire<br \/>\nearly Christian community was made up of Jews.&nbsp; In John&#8217;s Gospel this<br \/>\nword has a precise and clearly defined meaning: he is referring to the<br \/>\nTemple aristocracy.&nbsp; So the circle of accusers who instigate Jesus&#8217;<br \/>\ndeath is precisely indicated in the Fourth Gospel and clearly limited:<br \/>\nit is the Temple aristocracy &#8211; and not without certain exceptions, as<br \/>\nthe reference to Nicodemus (7:50ff.) shows.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But if John meant the Temple aristocracy, why didn&#8217;t he say so? Why<br \/>\ndidn&#8217;t he point to the Sadducees or the high priest, to someone who<br \/>\nmight plausibly have been running the Temple show, rather than saying,<br \/>\nas he does repeatedly, &#8220;the Jews&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>The late great biblical scholar (and Catholic priest) Raymond Brown&#8211;who Benedict elsewhere cites&#8211;laid out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/Faiths\/2004\/01\/Jesus-Versus-The-Jews.aspx?p=1\">a different scenario<\/a>.<br \/>\nBasically, it&#8217;s that around the year 100 John and his followers, having<br \/>\nfailed to persuade their fellow Antiochian Jews that Jesus was the<br \/>\nMessiah, and having been tossed out of synagogues as, well, <i>non-Jews<\/i><br \/>\nbecause of their messianism, were mighty pissed. They thought: Those<br \/>\nJews have rejected Jesus&#8211;just the way those Jews back in the day<br \/>\nrejected Jesus. It stands to reason that some of the language John used<br \/>\nwas intemperate and accusatory. And it&#8217;s very unfortunate that, in<br \/>\ncanonical form, it led to a lot of persecution. <\/p>\n<p>But the point is that John was writing at a difficult time for both<br \/>\ncommunities. The Temple was destroyed, and the new rabbinic Judaism was<br \/>\ngetting its act together and extruding what didn&#8217;t fit&#8211;like the new<br \/>\nthing that would become Christianity, which was trying to get its own<br \/>\nact together. Does the contemporary Jewish-Christian relationship need<br \/>\nto wrestle with the hard separation that the Gospel of John bears<br \/>\nwitness to? Maybe not. I can understand why it makes good sense for<br \/>\nBenedict to take the line he does, but I don&#8217;t have to buy it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OK, OK, I really do appreciate Pope Benedict&#8217;s hermeneutical exoneration of the Jews in re: the case against Jesus.
