You seem to think it is courageous and admirable of the Pope to continue
\nto function as a private theologian, even in areas in which he
\npossesses no particular competence (moral theology). It seems to many
\npeople I know that it is both irresponsible (because it creates
\nconfusion in the general populace about the exercise of the papal
\nmagisterium) and self-indulgent; self indulgent because it is a case of
\nthe Pope retreating to his “comfort zone” of writing and talking while
\nneglecting urgent tasks of governance.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Somehow, I don’t think it is politic to tell this pope not to venture
\ninto theological waters where he can’t swim. The Vatican tends to take
\nnote of such things. But the main thing is: What Benedict has done is a
\nBig Deal. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Professor Silk is the author of Spiritual Politics: Religion and America Since World War II and Unsecular Media: Making News of Religion in America. He is co-editor of Religion by Region, an eight-volume series on religion and public life in the United States, and co-author of The American Establishment, Making Capitalism Work, and One Nation Divisible: How Regional Religious Differences Shape American Politics.
