OOPS<\/a>! How did that happen? Evidently, donations to Obama’s campaign have dropped significantly. <\/p>\n

For the first time in the campaign, Republican John McCain in May raised about the same amount of money, $22 million, as Democrat Barack Obama.
\nMcCain also closed the gap in the amount of cash in the bank the two parties’ presumptive nominees have at their respective disposals as they enter the first phase of the general election.

\nObama’s fundraising in May marked a sharp fall-off after months of record-breaking donations. Even in difficult times, such as when he suffered a key loss in Pennsylvania in April, Obama brought in a steady flow of cash that usually topped $30 million a month.

\nAccording to Obama’s campaign, the drop in donations was caused in part by a shift in focus from bringing in big money to honing in on the delegates needed to clinch his party’s nomination.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, now that he’s the nominee, June should see an uptick in giving. But if Kerry’s numbers ($44 million) are any indication, it should be huge.
\nBTW, what does Obama mean by “bringing in big money?” He’s said that he’s raised most of his money from small donors. He’s stated that the average contribution was $107. He’s raised millions from his website, why wouldn’t that money keep rolling in especially during a hotly contested primary?
\nAnd it looks like the Republicans owe Clinton a big thank you for burning off some of Obama’s cash and leveling the playing field:<\/p>\n
