STEPHANOPOULOS: Your allies are signaling that patriotism\u2019s
\ngoing to be an issue in the fall.
\nHere\u2019s Karl Rove, in Gentleman\u2019s Quarterly Magazine. He said,
\n\u201cThere are Democrats, particularly blue-collar Democrats, who defect
\nto McCain because they see McCain as a patriotic figure and they see
\nObama as an elitist who\u2019s looking down his nose at them, which he is.
\nDo you have any doubt that Barack Obama shares your sense of
\npatriotism?
\nMCCAIN: I\u2019m sure he\u2019s very patriotic. But his relationship with
\nMr. Ayers is open to question. And that\u2026
\nSTEPHANOPOULOS: Why?
\nMCCAIN: Because if you\u2019re going to associate and have as a
\nfriend and serve on a board and have a guy kick off your campaign that
\nsays he\u2019s unrepentant, that he wished bombed more \u2014 and then, the
\nworst thing of all, that, I think, really indicates Senator Obama\u2019s
\nattitude, is he had the incredible statement that he compared Mr.
\nAyers, an unrepentant terrorist, with Senator Tom Coburn, Senator
\nCoburn, a physician who goes to Oklahoma on the weekends and brings
\nbabies into life \u2014 comparing those two \u2014 I mean, that\u2019s not \u2013
\nthat\u2019s an attitude, frankly, that certainly isn\u2019t in keeping with the
\noverall attitude\u2026

\nSTEPHANOPOULOS: Senator Obama said\u2026
\nMCCAIN: And it\u2019s very insulting to a great man, a great doctor,
\na great humanitarian, to compare to him with a guy who says, after
\n2001, I wish we had bombed more.
\nI had a reconciliation with the anti-war movement. One of the
\ngreat experiences of my life was to get to know and love David Ifshin.
\nI had a reconciliation with the Vietnamese, when we normalized
\nrelations.
\nBut how can you countenance someone who was engaged in bombings
\nwhich could have or did kill innocent people\u2026
\nSTEPHANOPOULOS: Senator Obama says he was eight years old when
\nthat was happening.
\nMCCAIN: But he became friends with him and spent time with him
\nwhile the guy was unrepentant over his activities as a member of a
\nterrorist organization, the Weathermen.
\nI don\u2019t \u2014 and then to compare him with Dr. Tom Coburn, who
\nspends so much of his life bringing babies into this world \u2014 that, in
\nmy view is really \u2014 borders out outrage.
\nSTEPHANOPOULOS: He also pointed out that he and Mr. Ayers have a
\nvery loose relationship. They live in the same neighborhood. There
\nwas an organizing meeting many, many years ago, in his house. And he
\nsays, frankly, I don\u2019t agree with these comments that Mr. Ayers made.
\nMCCAIN: Doesn\u2019t agree with them? Does he condemn them?
\nWould he condemn someone who says that they\u2019re unrepentant and
\nwished that they had bombed more \u2014 and compare him to a doctor, one
\nof the great humanitarian \u2014 in my view, one of the greatest
\nspokespersons for the rights of the unborn in America?
\nSTEPHANOPOULOS: Well, you say he should condemn these comments.
\nMCCAIN: Sure.
\nSTEPHANOPOULOS: A lot of Senator Obama\u2019s allies and others say
\nthat you should condemn the comments of Reverend John Hagee, an
\nevangelical pastor\u2026
\nMCCAIN: Oh, I do. And I did. I said, any comments that he made
\nabout the Catholic church I strongly condemn, of course.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, Obama is friends with a terrorist and McCain is endorsed by a pastor, nice equivalence there, Stephanopoulous!

\nAnd here<\/a> is Obama’s rather silly response. He’ll need to work on coming up with a better response.<\/p>\n
