During his first run for elected office, Barack Obama played a greater role than his aides now acknowledge in crafting liberal stands on gun control, the death penalty and abortion\u2013 positions that appear at odds with the more moderate image he\u2019s projected during his presidential campaign.
\nThe evidence comes from an amended version of an Illinois voter group\u2019s detailed questionnaire, filed under his name during his 1996 bid for a state Senate seat.
\nLate last year, in response to a Politico story about Obama\u2019s answers to the original questionnaire, his aides said he \u201cnever saw or approved\u201d the questionnaire.
\nThey asserted the responses were filled out by a campaign aide who \u201cunintentionally mischaracterize(d) his position.\u201d
\nBut a Politico examination determined that Obama was actually interviewed about the issues on the questionnaire by the liberal Chicago non-profit group that issued it. And it found that Obama \u2013 the day after sitting for the interview \u2013 filed an amended version of the questionnaire, which appears to contain Obama\u2019s own handwritten notes adding to one answer.

\nThrough an aide, Obama, who won the group\u2019s endorsement as well as the statehouse seat, did not dispute that the handwriting was his. But he contended it doesn\u2019t prove he completed, approved \u2013 or even read \u2013 the latter questionnaire.
\n\u201cSen. Obama didn\u2019t fill out these state Senate questionnaires \u2013 a staffer did \u2013 and there are several answers that didn’t reflect his views then or now,\u201d said Tommy Vietor, a spokesman for Obama\u2019s campaign, in an emailed statement. \u201cHe may have jotted some notes on the front page of the questionnaire at the meeting, but that doesn’t change the fact that some answers didn’t reflect his views. \nBoth versions of the 1996 questionnaires provide answers his presidential campaign disavows to questions about whether Obama supports capital punishment and state legislation to \u201cban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns.\u201d
\nHe responded simply \u201cNo\u201d and \u201cYes,\u201d respectively, to those questions on both questionnaires.
\nBut a fact sheet provided by his campaign flatly denies Obama ever held those views, asserting he \u201cconsistently supported the death penalty for certain crimes, but backed a moratorium until problems were fixed.\u201d And it points out that as a state senator, he led an effort to reform Illinois\u2019 death penalty laws.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, he didn’t know about it but fixed it because someone else filled it out incorrectly. I wonder when that story will change. But if he fixed it, why not fix the gun law and death penalty questions?
