{"id":1442,"date":"2006-10-14T07:37:00","date_gmt":"2006-10-14T07:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/reformedchicksblabbing\/2006\/10\/the-democrats-are-the-party-of.html"},"modified":"2006-10-14T07:37:00","modified_gmt":"2006-10-14T07:37:00","slug":"the-democrats-are-the-party-of","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/reformedchicksblabbing\/2006\/10\/the-democrats-are-the-party-of.html","title":{"rendered":"The Democrats are the Party of Beauty?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a party headed by Nancy Pelosi, do you really want to be saying <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/10\/13\/AR2006101301753.html?referrer=email\">this<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">With a Parade of Attractive Candidates, the Party May Benefit From the Politics of Beauty<\/span><br \/>\nMaybe Democratic candidate Michael Arcuri is running strong in this Republican House district because he pledges to <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">expand health coverage, balance the budget and raise the minimum wage.<\/span><br \/>\nOr maybe it&#8217;s his piercing Italian eyes and runner&#8217;s physique.<br \/>\n&#8220;He is pretty good-looking,&#8221; observed Paula Ferrin with admiration, as the 47-year-old district attorney worked the crowd at a local senior center.<br \/>\n&#8220;What we want is brains, honey,&#8221; scolded her friend Rose Oliver.<br \/>\n&#8220;True,&#8221; Ferrin answered, &#8220;but handsome doesn&#8217;t hurt.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe research is unambiguous that Ferrin is right: Attractive politicians have an edge over not-so-attractive ones. The phenomenon is resonating especially this year. By a combination of luck and design, Democrats seem to be fielding an uncommonly high number of uncommonly good-looking candidates.<br \/>\nThe beauty gap between the parties, some on Capitol Hill muse, could even be a factor in who controls Congress after Election Day.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>His top three things are domestic, what about the war on terror?  How is he going to do the job that he&#8217;s constitutionally mandated to do?  How is he going to protect us?  That&#8217;s the issue, not whether he&#8217;s cute.  Sometimes I&#8217;m so embarrassed that I&#8217;m a woman. (And no, <a href=\"http:\/\/hillbillywhitetrash.blogspot.com\/\">Lemuel<\/a>, I still wouldn&#8217;t give up my right to vote.)<br \/>\nI guess that we can sit and admire their beauty while they destroy our economy by raising our taxes and withdrawing our troops from Iraq.<br \/>\nRead the rest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/10\/13\/AR2006101301753_pf.html\">here<\/a>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Updated to add<\/span>: Man!  I should always remember to follow my own rule when I comment on the news from any MSM source: verify!  This is what they consider good looking:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/736\/2127\/1600\/mike.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px;text-align: center;cursor: pointer\" src=\"https:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/736\/2127\/320\/mike.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nNot to be mean or anything but beautiful?  Really?  What in the world does his opponent look like?  Quasimodo? (hehe)  OK, that might be over the top but really, if you are going to make a point of writing an entire article about how beautiful a candiate is, then you are building up expectations that the guy will be exceptionally good looking.
