The Huffington Post reports<\/a> that “Gawain Kripke warned<\/a> that, “the record rise in food prices is a grave reminder that until we act on the underlying causes of hunger and climate change, we will find ourselves perpetually on the knife’s edge of disaster.” A year of extreme weather, along with other short and long-term factors, had shocked our food system, disrupting supply chains and sending the price of many food items through the roof.<\/p>\n

Just days later rioters in Algeria were heard chanting, “Give us sugar!”<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Reports are the food shortages are reaching crisis levels.<\/a><\/span> As global food prices soar, the number of hungry people will rise even higher and as we have seen in Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt, people will voice their frustration. <\/span>As heads of state met at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, at the end of January, the mood in Africa’s Arab nations was restive following a spate of demonstrations over unemployment and rising food prices.<\/span><\/div>\n

At the meeting, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed concern about increasing world food prices, conceding that it was responsible for the chaos that has erupted in a number of countries. “We are looking for ways to overcome this crisis,” he said.<\/p>\n
