\"\"<\/a>I have hit a poetry phase in my life in the last few months. I have been discovering many poets who are challenging me and inspiring me\u00a0 in a way other work is not. Certainly one of them is Anne Doe Overstreet<\/a>. I think Anne – who is married to that other\u00a0Overstreet I have recently promoted here on blog – certainly is in running for the best title of a book this year. Then there’s the fact that her attention to detail, her choice of detail,\u00a0 and how that puts her in an elite\u00a0 – but accessible- class of emerging poets.<\/p>\n

Here is\u00a0 a sample poem from her debut collection of poetry “Delicate Machinery Suspended.”<\/p>\n

Surviving the Open Heart<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The hotel fan\u2019s one long drawn exhalation
\ndisturbing the heat that has settled like dust
\nacross the room, the square-cornered chair
\nthe unsteady spool of table. You are broken
\ninto pieces and lie scattered\u2014shoes, unzipped
\npurse bought cheap for traveling, a scrap of paper
\nbearing numbers for Hampton Inn, St. Joseph\u2019s Hospital
\nand a sister in Texas. You have brought what you saw fit
\nto wear, changeable from grief to joy, comfortable white
\nsandals with arch support for the long waiting, the cotton
\nknit sweater that draws your husband\u2019s eyes to your breasts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Later you will slip beneath the water of the hotel pool
\ninto a silence almost as blue as the heart when it stops;
\nyou will practice floating between breaths,
\ntouch two fingers to the place on your abdomen
\nwhere tubes left red caves beneath your father\u2019s
\nbreastbone and try to imagine how the skin
\ncan keep back what belongs in the dark.
\nYour heart is\u00a0 self-conscious now, listening for its
\nown name in the waves of pulse and breath;
\nthe body curling around it, fascinated by the
\nunthinkable cut, the parting of red wall upon blue,
\nthe delicate machinery suspended.<\/p>\n
