{"id":2473,"date":"2012-05-11T15:17:45","date_gmt":"2012-05-11T15:17:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/projectconversion\/?p=2473"},"modified":"2012-05-11T15:17:45","modified_gmt":"2012-05-11T15:17:45","slug":"mothers-doing-more-than-just-the-laundry-since","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/projectconversion\/2012\/05\/mothers-doing-more-than-just-the-laundry-since.html","title":{"rendered":"Mothers: Doing More Than Just the Laundry Since&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Moms are kind of a big deal, so it&#8217;s no surprise that cultures around the world celebrate the blessing of motherhood in various ways.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In digging up information on the American Mother&#8217;s Day celebration, I was encouraged to find that early forms of the holiday involved mothers whose sons had died on opposite sides of the American Civil War. Postbellum mom&#8217;s were reaching across the table and meeting their former enemies on common ground: mourning over their sons lost in a war which ripped the nation in two.<\/p>\n<p>Ann Jarvis created a committee in 1868 for this very reason, to &#8220;reunite families that had been divided during the Civil War.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s no wonder we often refer to mothers as the &#8220;glue&#8221; of our families and indeed, our societies. These women are examples for the interfaith movements of today.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2474\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2474\" style=\"width: 245px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/291\/2012\/05\/moms.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2474\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/291\/2012\/05\/moms.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"206\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2474\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">See ladies? It&#039;s about bringing everything together and creating one heck of a world!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Don&#8217;t hate on the baking illustration. Lot&#8217;s of mom&#8217;s are culinary artists and they deserve a shout-out.<\/p>\n<p>So, what do some of the world&#8217;s religious traditions have to say about moms and motherhood&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><em>&#8230;And revere the wombs that bore you, for God is ever watchful over you.<\/em><\/span>&#8221; &#8211;al-Qur&#8217;an 4:1<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">&#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Her children arise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.<\/span><\/em>&#8220;&#8211;The Proverbs of Solomon 31: 28<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">&#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">I am the Mother of all things and My love is poured out upon the earth.<\/span><\/em>&#8220;&#8211;The Charge of the Goddess<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><em>Just as a mother would protect her only child at the risk of her own life, even so, let him cultivate a boundless heart toward all beings.<\/em><\/span>&#8221; &#8211;Metta Sutra, verse 7<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><em>From woman, man is born;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><em> within woman, man is conceived; to woman he is engaged and married.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><em> Woman becomes his friend; through woman, the future generations come.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><em> When his woman dies, he seeks another woman; to woman he is bound.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><em> So why call her bad? From her, kings are born.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><em> From woman, woman is born; without woman, there would be no one at all.<\/em><\/span>&#8220;&#8211;from theGuru Granth Sahib<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Of course, there are many more. Please include verses or other nuggets of momma-loving wisdom in the comments section below.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">It&#8217;s no mistake that from the dawn of humanity, we&#8217;ve equated life, nourishment, love, birth, wisdom, sensuality, and even the earth itself with the form and ideal of woman\/motherhood. Even the gods, and in at least one tradition, God Himself, was born of woman.
