Missing in Action When We Need It Most"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the_press_office\/President-Obama-Announces-Additional-Members-of-Advisory-Council-on-Faith-Based-and-Neighborhood-Partnerships\/\">Obama&#8217;s Council on Faith Based Partnerships<\/a> has fallen off<br \/>\nthe map &#8211; and we need them back.<span>\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>Nothing exemplifies the sad lack of contribution of this much hailed<br \/>\ndiverse group of religious leaders than the current impasse on Health Care with<br \/>\nthe Stupak Abortion amendment.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Even before President Obama took office he was assembling a<br \/>\nteam of religious leaders from a wide range of backgrounds to advise him as he<br \/>\nproposed to tackle difficult issues such as poverty reduction, health care, war<br \/>\nand other moral questions of governance.<span>\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>Many of us were excited about the prospect of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/paul-raushenbush\/the-urgency-of-the-presid_b_145857.html\">Obama&#8217;s Faith Council<\/a> which included<br \/>\nsuch theologically and politically diverse names as Father Snyder of Catholic<br \/>\nCharities, Rabbi Saperstein of the Reform Action Committee, Dr. Frank Page<br \/>\nformer President of the Southern Baptist Convention, and Dr. Sharon Watkins,<br \/>\nGeneral Minister of the Disciples of Christ.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Unlike in the past, Obama&#8217;s Faith Council was allotted no<br \/>\nmoney to dispense so it was relieved of the political nightmare of accusations<br \/>\nof favoritism and could focus on policy questions.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>The promise of this group lay in its diversity.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>The idea being that if this group could<br \/>\ncome to some consensus on the important moral issues of the day that it would<br \/>\nhelp inform President Obama&#8217;s administration to enact policy that reflected, by<br \/>\nproxy, the religious wisdom of the vast majority of the American population.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Unfortunately, after a much-publicized announcement and<br \/>\nlaunch, the group has basically been silent.<span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Apparently the Council is working on a &#8220;report&#8221; to<br \/>\ngive to the President sometime next year on the various areas they have been<br \/>\nassigned to investigate.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>This<br \/>\nseems like a classic blow off &#8211; &#8220;Yes, faith leaders, why don&#8217;t you go write a<br \/>\nreport.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I look forward to glancing<br \/>\nat it.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The issues that need moral guidance are on the table now!<span>\u00a0 <\/span>By its silence, the President&#8217;s Council<br \/>\non Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnerships is acquiescing to its own<br \/>\nirrelevancy.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Most Americans and policy makers have<br \/>\nassuredly forgotten the council exists &#8211; but not those of us who really<br \/>\nbelieved in the possibilities of the group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The &#8216;Urgency of Now&#8217; includes finding a way to a health care<br \/>\nbill, address questions of unemployment and foreclosures, the wars in<br \/>\nAfghanistan and Iraq, torture and even balancing gay marriage with freedom of religion.<span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The time will never be more<br \/>\nurgent for the Council&#8217;s moral voice on these questions. <span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Obama&#8217;s Council on Faith Based Partnerships has fallen off the map &#8211;
