Rev. Donna Schaper is the Senior Pastor<\/a> at the Judson Memorial Church in New York City. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nWilliam James in his
\nmarvelous book, THE VARIETIES OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE, speaks of the transition
\nfrom Catholicism to Protestantism as the transition of the brocaded, artistic,
\ncolorful Baroque to one man in a black suit carrying a black book which he
\nplaces on a plain table in an unornamented meeting house.\u00a0 <\/span>His observations are on target. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>There is nothing perfect about
\nProtestantism.\u00a0 <\/span>Still it has a few
\nvalues that might make a non-violent approach possible for those of us who
\nspiritually and theologically value the right to choose an abortion.\u00a0 <\/span>With Hillary Clinton, many of us think
\nabortion should be safe, legal and rare.\u00a0
\n<\/span>We also think it is a constitutionally guaranteed right.\u00a0 <\/span>We also have respect for the constitutional
\npromotion of a brocaded right to the separation of church and state.<\/span><\/p>\nWhen Roman Catholics
\ntake up a separate offering to remove abortion from federal funding and send
\ntheir people home with an experience of the body of Christ – and a postcard to
\nsend to their congressional representatives – they violate both the body of
\nChrist and the constitution.\u00a0 <\/span>These
\nare not small matters.\u00a0 <\/span>Some of us
\nare tempted to do more than growl: our stomachs churn at the deeper issue of
\none theology dominating another, illegally.\u00a0 <\/span>Some of us find ourselves filling up with a kind of hate at
\ninjustice, abuse of the constitution, power gone amok.\u00a0 <\/span>Some women are wearing T-shirts saying
\nthat we are feminists formerly for Obama.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Not me: I see what he is up against. We surely understand the President’s
\ndilemma and praise our baroque friends for their protection of immigrants,
\ngays, even women to a point in the new and overall positive health care
\nbill.\u00a0 <\/span>We sense ourselves eating different
\nbread but not being part of a different body.<\/span><\/p>\nThe reason hate is so
\ntempting is that we are in fact so close to our Roman Catholic brothers and
\nsisters.\u00a0 <\/span>In the name of all that
\nis good about Jesus and his international body, I spend a good bit of time
\npraying for the hate and anger to subside.\u00a0 <\/span>I also pray for the right lawsuit to stop my sisters and
\nbrothers from abusing the constitution by handing out post cards and taking up
\nspecial offerings.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Protestants may be plain but we frown on
\nthis sort of imperial moral legislating.\u00a0
\n<\/span>We actually believe in the separation of Church and State and hope no (consenting
\nand believing) Catholic will ever have an abortion.<\/span><\/p>\nIt is not hateful to
\ncall to account. Nor is it hateful to enjoy the right to be different.\u00a0 <\/span>While frowning on the temptation to
\nhate a group of unmarried men, namely the bishops, who don’t even represent
\ntheir people, who believe more than not in the right to choose an abortion
\nbeing protected by the federal government, we who are hurt and we who will be
\nhurt by the lack of funding for abortions have a right to call for strong
\ncountervailing action.\u00a0 <\/span>A good
\nlawsuit against the postcards would go a long way towards resolving this dilemma.\u00a0 <\/span>Then we might go back to living on a fair
\nand even playing field when it comes to politics, theocracies and women’s
