{"id":605,"date":"2009-10-22T10:11:00","date_gmt":"2009-10-22T10:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/progressiverevival\/2009\/10\/vatican-woos-conservative-anglicans.html"},"modified":"2009-10-22T10:11:00","modified_gmt":"2009-10-22T10:11:00","slug":"vatican-woos-conservative-anglicans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/progressiverevival\/2009\/10\/vatican-woos-conservative-anglicans.html","title":{"rendered":"Vatican Woos Conservative Anglicans:  This is News?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This week, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/10\/21\/world\/europe\/21pope.html\">the Vatican announced that it would make it<br \/>\neasier for conservative Anglicans<\/a> and Episcopalians&#8211;those uncomfortable with women priests and<br \/>\naccepting gay people&#8211;to join the Roman Catholic Church.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>The move surprised Anglican leaders<br \/>\nwho, evidently, had no idea that the Vatican planned a massive sheep-stealing<br \/>\ncampaign.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>The news sparked<br \/>\nlively&#8211;and sometimes mean-spirited&#8211;debate in both print and online<br \/>\nmedia.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Most stories pointed to the historic nature of the Vatican&#8217;s<br \/>\naction.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Evidently, not since the<br \/>\nProtestant Reformation has Rome invited so many of its former children to come<br \/>\nhome.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>There have been many<br \/>\nremarkable individual &#8220;returns&#8221; of Anglicans to the Roman Catholic Church&#8211;most<br \/>\nnotably the English theologian John Henry Newman or the American bishop Levi S.<br \/>\nIves in the nineteenth century.<span>\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>But historians strain to remember a mass invitation like this one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Reporters, however, have missed something important.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>While it might be unusual for Rome to<br \/>\nformally invite Protestant to return to Mother Church, it is in no way odd for<br \/>\nRoman Catholics&#8211;especially those in Europe, North America, and Australia&#8211;to<br \/>\nabandon Rome for Protestant denominations.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>For decades, cradle Roman Catholics have been leaving their<br \/>\nchurch in favor of finding congregations that are open to divorce, practice<br \/>\nbirth control, support women in the ministry, and respect the dignity of gay<br \/>\nand lesbian people.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Indeed,<br \/>\naccording to a <a href=\"http:\/\/pewresearch.org\/pubs\/743\/united-states-religion\">2008 Pew survey<\/a>, one in ten adult Americans is an ex-Roman<br \/>\nCatholic&#8211;with the Roman Catholic Church showing intense decline among Anglo-<br \/>\nand African-American populations (Hispanic immigration is helping RC membership<br \/>\nhold steady).<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicnews.com\/data\/stories\/cns\/0506488.htm\">Catholic News service story from 2005<\/a> noted that the<br \/>\nchange was a &#8220;constant trickle,&#8221; saying:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top:0in;margin-right:.5in;margin-bottom:0in;margin-left:.5in;margin-bottom:.0001pt\"><i><span>Among those<br \/>\nchanging denominations, the Roman Catholics generally say they long to breathe<br \/>\nthe &#8220;free air&#8221; of the Anglican Communion, with Catholic priests<br \/>\nusually saying they plan to marry, the bishop said. The Anglicans usually say<br \/>\nthey have had enough of the &#8220;woolly thinking&#8221; of their leadership, he<br \/>\nadded.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>&#8220;Anglicans who become<br \/>\nRoman Catholic generally become very conservative Roman Catholics, while Roman<br \/>\nCatholics who become Anglican tend to become very liberal Anglicans,&#8221; he<br \/>\nsaid.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>These observations have been backed up in a number of academic studies&#8211;including<br \/>\nmy own work.<span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>From 2002-2006, I<br \/>\nconducted a Lilly Endowment funded research project on vital mainline churches (findings may be found in <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Christianity-Rest-Us-Neighborhood-Transforming\/dp\/0060859490\/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1231026826&amp;sr=8-1\">Christianity for the Rest of Us<\/a><\/span>)\u00a0and found that successful mainline congregations had large populations of<br \/>\nformer Roman Catholics, sometimes as many as a fifth of the members would have<br \/>\nonce been Catholic (in two Hispanic congregations, every member was a former<br \/>\nCatholic). Several of the project pastors had also been Catholic.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>In every case, the former Catholics<br \/>\npraised the intellectual and spiritual openness of the mainline church as the<br \/>\nmajor reason for switching.<span>\u00a0And the mainline congregations had accommodated many Roman Catholic faith practices&#8211;everything from centering prayer to Marian devotion&#8211;to help converts be more comfortable in the new Protestant setting. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>In western Christianity, religious switching is a way of life.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>That the Vatican has just figured that<br \/>\nout only proves they read polls.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>That&#8217;s<br \/>\nit.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>This isn&#8217;t really news.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Churchgoers are a migrant lot&#8211;and they<br \/>\nare voting for their favorite theologies with their feet.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Sometimes they vote liberal (as in the<br \/>\ncase of RC&#8217;s leaving their church) and sometimes they vote conservative (as in<br \/>\nthe case of Protestants becoming Catholic).<span>\u00a0 <\/span>But that they do it&#8211;and that their denominations engage in<br \/>\nsheep-stealing to boast sagging membership rolls&#8211;should surprise no one.<span>\u00a0\u00a0When liberal Anglicans join the Roman Catholic Church en masse or conservative Catholics chose to become Episcopalians&#8230;.well, <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic\">that<\/span> would be news.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week, the Vatican announced that it would make it easier for conservative Anglicans and Episcopalians&#8211;those uncomfortable with women priests and accepting gay people&#8211;to join the Roman Catholic Church.\u00a0 The move surprised Anglican leaders who, evidently, had no idea that the Vatican planned a massive sheep-stealing campaign.\u00a0 The news sparked lively&#8211;and sometimes mean-spirited&#8211;debate in both&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":66,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[12,32,14,9],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-605","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-catholics","category-christians","category-mainline-protestants","category-religion-in-the-public-square"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Vatican Woos Conservative Anglicans: This is News?
