Equality March<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in Washington this weekend.<span style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I don&#8217;t remember hearing religious voices at my first\u00a0<span class=\"yshortcuts\" style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">March on Washington<\/span>\u00a0in 1993, so I consider this a sign of progress.<span style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>But no matter how many more of the faithful may be marching with us this year, the Church, writ large, is late to the party.<span style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">\u00a0<\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;line-height: 1.2em;margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-left: 0px\"><font size=\"3\" face=\"Palatino Linotype\">\u00a0<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;line-height: 1.2em;margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-left: 0px\"><font size=\"3\" face=\"Palatino Linotype\">With the exception of the\u00a0<span class=\"yshortcuts\">United Church of Christ<\/span>, the Unitarian Universalists and the Jewish Reform and Reconstructionist movements, much of organized religion still struggles to shed its homophobic past and to liberate its sexual ethic from moralism and shame.<span style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>No wonder\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.americanreligionsurvey-aris.org\/\"><span class=\"yshortcuts\" style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">growing numbers of Americans<\/span><\/a>\u00a0find the Church irrelevant to their lives, particularly their sexual lives.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;line-height: 1.2em;margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-left: 0px\"><font size=\"3\" face=\"Palatino Linotype\">\u00a0<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;line-height: 1.2em;margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-left: 0px\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Palatino Linotype\">This is not to say the Church is a hopeless case.<span style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Far from it.<span style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>As this summer&#8217;s actions at the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/debrahaffner.blogspot.com\/search?q=episcopal\"><span class=\"yshortcuts\" style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">Episcopal<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/progressiverevival\/2009\/08\/lutheran-gay-rights.html\"><span class=\"yshortcuts\" style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">Lutheran<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<span class=\"yshortcuts\" style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">general assemblies<\/span>\u00a0demonstrated, our\u00a0<span class=\"yshortcuts\" style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">religious communities<\/span>\u00a0are finding their way forward on the long journey from &#8220;sexuality is sinful&#8221; to &#8220;sexuality is holy,&#8221; and from &#8220;God created sex for procreation&#8221; to &#8220;God created sex for pleasure.&#8221;<span style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>That journey requires a transformation in religious thinking, followed by a transformation in religious teaching.<span style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">\u00a0<\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;line-height: 1.2em;margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-left: 0px\"><font size=\"3\" face=\"Palatino Linotype\">\u00a0<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;line-height: 1.2em;margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-left: 0px\"><font size=\"3\" face=\"Palatino Linotype\">This week I attended the annual alumni gathering at\u00a0<span class=\"yshortcuts\" style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">Union Theological Seminary<\/span>\u00a0in New York, where the workshops and panels centered on the theme of &#8220;<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.utsnyc.edu\/Page.aspx?pid=1537\">Sex and the Church<\/a>.&#8221;<span style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Marvin Ellison, professor of ethics at\u00a0<span class=\"yshortcuts\" style=\"cursor: pointer;background-color: transparent;border-bottom-style: none;border-bottom-width: initial;border-bottom-color: initial;line-height: 1.2em\">Bangor Theological Seminary<\/span>, pointed out that much of contemporary heterosexual sex is &#8220;queer sex&#8221; in the eyes of traditionalists.<span style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Contracepted sex, non-marital sex and casual sex challenge centuries of religious moralism, yet progressives are finding the theological grounds for defining queer sex as sinful increasingly shaky.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;line-height: 1.2em;margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-left: 0px\"><font size=\"3\" face=\"Palatino Linotype\">\u00a0<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;line-height: 1.2em;margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-left: 0px\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Palatino Linotype\">Ellen Armour, a feminist theologian from Vanderbilt, noted how feminist and\u00a0<span class=\"yshortcuts\">queer theory<\/span>\u00a0has helped break the shackles of sexual and gender binaries (straight or gay, male or female) and opened our eyes to the diversity of sexualities and genders in the human population.<span style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>What queer people themselves have learned, though, is that even the broader array of new identities we have created &#8211; gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer &#8211; do not nearly define human experience, which can be remarkably fluid over time.<span style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Sexuality and gender is not only diverse across humanity, but within individual lifetimes as well.<span style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">\u00a0<\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;line-height: 1.2em;margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-left: 0px\"><font size=\"3\" face=\"Palatino Linotype\">\u00a0<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;line-height: 1.2em;margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-left: 0px\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Palatino Linotype\"><span class=\"yshortcuts\">Debra Haffner<\/span>, executive director of the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\">Religious Institute<\/a>, said the attention paid to gay and lesbian issues has created space for organized religion to rethink its relationship with sexuality more broadly.<span style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>How do we break the silence surrounding sexuality in our congregations, how do we raise children to be sexually healthy and make\u00a0<span class=\"yshortcuts\" style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">ethical decisions<\/span>, how do we recognize the connections between sexuality and spirituality?<span style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">\u00a0<\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;line-height: 1.2em;margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-left: 0px\"><font size=\"3\" face=\"Palatino Linotype\">\u00a0<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;line-height: 1.2em;margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-left: 0px\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Palatino Linotype\">David Carr, a Biblical scholar at Union, concluded that &#8220;affirming human erotic connection is a central, if not the central, human vocation.&#8221;<span style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">\u00a0<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;line-height: 1.2em;margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-left: 0px\"><font size=\"3\" face=\"Palatino Linotype\">\u00a0<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;line-height: 1.2em;margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-left: 0px\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Palatino Linotype\">Religious progressives marching in D.C. this weekend are taking a stand for equality and\u00a0<span class=\"yshortcuts\">social justice<\/span>.<span style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>May their activism awaken the larger Church to its responsibility, long overdue, to shed outdated moralism and embrace humanity it all of its queer, sexual, spiritual
