{"id":597,"date":"2009-10-09T09:22:09","date_gmt":"2009-10-09T09:22:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/progressiverevival\/2009\/10\/president-obama-receives-the-n.html"},"modified":"2009-10-09T09:22:09","modified_gmt":"2009-10-09T09:22:09","slug":"president-obama-receives-the-n","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/progressiverevival\/2009\/10\/president-obama-receives-the-n.html","title":{"rendered":"The Power of Words: President Obama Receives the Nobel Peace Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Afghanistan, the Olympics, the Dalai Lama&#8230;in a week&nbsp;when the President was domestically burdened by several international quagmiers or miscues, the Nobel&nbsp;Committee awards Barack Obama the Peace Prize.&nbsp; According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/10\/10\/world\/10nobel.html?_r=1&amp;hp\">New York Times<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The Nobel Committee announced in Oslo that it has awarded the annual peace prize to <a title=\"More articles about Barack Obama\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/o\/barack_obama\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\"><font color=\"#004276\">Barack Obama<\/font><\/a>, just nine months into his presidency, &#8220;for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The question&nbsp;that immediately must be asked is:&nbsp;How has&nbsp;the President&nbsp;&#8220;strengthened international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples&#8221;?&nbsp; The answer is exactly what hawkish conservatives deride him for &#8211; his speeches.&nbsp; The committee especially cited the approach he has had to nuclear weapons as evidenced in the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/7984353.stm\">speech in Prague<\/a>; and his willingness to directly engage the Muslim world in his brilliant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/06\/04\/us\/politics\/04obama.text.html\">speech in Cairo<\/a>.&nbsp; Anyone who domestically dismisses these efforts will have explain why America has risen in the past ten&nbsp; months <a href=\"http:\/\/features.csmonitor.com\/globalnews\/2009\/10\/06\/new-poll-finds-obama-has-already-rebuilt-americas-global-brand\/\">to be the most admired nation in the world <\/a>after having fallen during President Bush&#8217;s terms.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The President&#8217;s ability to communicate across&nbsp;divisiive liines (who can forget his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/03\/18\/us\/politics\/18text-obama.html\">race speech<\/a> during the campaign) is laudable and extremely important in our globalized world.&nbsp; Words do matter and people around the world are listening to our President.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Ultimately, the&nbsp;President will have to make hard choices about&nbsp;Afghanistan, China, Israel and Palestine, and other issues that affect world peace.&nbsp; Rhetoric&nbsp;will have to yield concrete action.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">But for today: congratulations Mr. President!
