Last
\nsummer a handful of students and I had the chance to meet with HH Dalai Lama in
\nDharamsala, India. \u00a0We spent an hour and a half listening, laughing and
\nlearning his views on inter-faith relations, the meaning of non-violent
\nresistance and world events. One of the questions asked to HH was: “Will
\nTibet’s future be changed by the election of Barack Obama?” \u00a0That
\nquestion has been unfortunately answered with a resounding – no! \u00a0In fact,
\nAmerica’s\u00a0commitment\u00a0to Tibet may be worse than under President Bush. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Politico.com<\/span><\/a>\u00a0reported that President
\nObama snubbed HH Dalia Lama this week during the Dalai Lama’s visit to
\nWashington DC. \u00a0The only thing that can account for it is that this White
\nHouse is so afraid of the Chinese and the debt the hold that they are now able
\nto dictate American foreign policy:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

When it comes to the White House’s decision not to have President
\nBarack Obama meet with the Dalai Lama during his visit to Washington this week,
\nsome are seeing an $800 billion elephant in the room.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n


<\/span>That, of course, is the amount of U.S. Treasury debt held by the
\nChinese government. That makes China the largest foreign holder of U.S. debt,
\nand the country’s willingness to buy more is essential to the ability of the
\nUnited States to finance its deficit spending.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n


<\/span>And naturally, the Chinese do not want the new American president to
\nmeet with — and lend credibility to — the Dalai Lama, who is a longtime
\nadversary of the Chinese government.<\/span>
This week will mark the first time since 1991 that the Dalai Lama has
\ncome to Washington and not met with the U.S. president.<\/span>
That leads one former Federal Reserve official to suspect that
\nChinese fiscal leverage over the American government is at the root of the
\ndecision. “Bottom line,” says the official, “don’t piss off your
\nbanker.”<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n


<\/span>Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.), a co-chairman of the Congressional
\nTibet Caucus, blasted “the administration’s unwillingness to meet with an
\ninternationally respected human rights leader in order to placate Chinese
\ntyrants.”<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nthe end of our time together HH asked a sincere question: Why will America not
\nquestion China’s treatment of Tibet and not being able to help myself I said:
\n“Because we are intimidated!” \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
