{"id":594,"date":"2009-10-01T12:36:22","date_gmt":"2009-10-01T12:36:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/progressiverevival\/2009\/10\/machine-gun-theology.html"},"modified":"2009-10-01T12:36:22","modified_gmt":"2009-10-01T12:36:22","slug":"machine-gun-theology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/progressiverevival\/2009\/10\/machine-gun-theology.html","title":{"rendered":"Machine Gun Theology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><br \/>\n<!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:#333333\">Yesterday, a friend sent me a link to a video from<br \/>\nSouthwestern Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swbts.edu\/index.cfm?pageid=1701\">&#8220;Taking the<br \/>\nHill.&#8221;<\/a><span>\u00a0 <\/span>I thought it might be a<br \/>\npolitical video encouraging conservative Christians to go to Washington to<br \/>\nlobby against health care or some such thing.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Actually, it was much worse.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>&#8220;Taking the Hill&#8221; is a bizarre call to evangelize depicting<br \/>\nChristians as &#8220;soldiers&#8221; in a war for souls under their &#8220;real&#8221;<br \/>\ncommander-in-chief, Jesus.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>It<br \/>\nreveals almost pornographic-religious obsession with guns and violence that<br \/>\nshould be deeply disturbing for any faith community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:#333333\">The &#8220;Taking the Hill&#8221; campaign was launched last month<br \/>\nat the seminary.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>According the<br \/>\nSeptember 17 edition of <i>The Baptist<br \/>\nPress, <\/i>President Paige Patterson<span>\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>kicked off the project:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top:0in;margin-right:.5in;margin-bottom:0in;margin-left:.5in;margin-bottom:.0001pt\"><span style=\"color:#333333\">FORT WORTH, Texas (BP)&#8211;Dressed in<br \/>\ncamouflage and stationed as the gunner in a Chenowth Desert Fast Attack<br \/>\nVehicle, Paige Patterson stormed onto the chapel stage.??After firing a round<br \/>\nof blanks from a .50-caliber Browning machine gun, Southwestern Baptist<br \/>\nTheological Seminary&#8217;s president took his place behind the pulpit and initiated<br \/>\noperation &#8220;Taking the Hill.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top:0in;margin-right:.5in;margin-bottom:0in;margin-left:.5in;margin-bottom:.0001pt\"><span style=\"color:#333333\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top:0in;margin-right:.5in;margin-bottom:0in;margin-left:.5in;margin-bottom:.0001pt\"><span style=\"color:#333333\">&#8230;.Patterson lifted his Bible,<br \/>\npointing out that God has armed believers with His Word, along with prayer and<br \/>\nproclamation. Then, reading 2 Corinthians 5, he urged believers to testify to<br \/>\nthe Gospel of Christ, reminding them of Paul&#8217;s motivation: the &#8220;terror of<br \/>\nthe Lord,&#8221; the righteous judge of all men and women, and the &#8220;love of<br \/>\nChrist,&#8221; who died to save all who believe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top:0in;margin-right:.5in;margin-bottom:0in;margin-left:.5in;margin-bottom:.0001pt\"><span style=\"color:#333333\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top:0in;margin-right:.5in;margin-bottom:0in;margin-left:.5in;margin-bottom:.0001pt\"><span style=\"color:#333333\">&#8230;.Lifting his left hand, Patterson<br \/>\nsaw that it was covered with blood &#8212; the blood of a woman who died without<br \/>\nhearing the Gospel although she lived less than a mile from the seminary. His<br \/>\nright hand was covered with the blood of a man who took his own life because<br \/>\nPatterson did not witness to him at God&#8217;s prompting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top:0in;margin-right:.5in;margin-bottom:0in;margin-left:.5in;margin-bottom:.0001pt\"><span style=\"color:#333333\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:#333333\">I know that it is a free country, and that we have both<br \/>\nreligious freedom and certain rights to own guns.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>But when these two rights interweave&#8211;as they are doing&#8211;it is dangerous to both church and state.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Any church that advances such a crusading and violent vision<br \/>\nis far from its founder&#8217;s vision, &#8220;Blessed are the peacemakers, for theirs is<br \/>\nthe Kingdom of God.&#8221;<span>\u00a0 <\/span>And the state<br \/>\nthat fails to understand that people with guns who believe that God has armed<br \/>\nthem are dangerous isn&#8217;t serving the good of a peaceable society.<span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:#333333\">Although weapons and religion may have been natural<br \/>\npartners in the Middle Ages or on the American frontier, isn&#8217;t it time to<br \/>\nrecognize that we live in the twenty-first century?<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Guns and grace don&#8217;t go together.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Shouldn&#8217;t true religion&#8211;genuinely transformative faith&#8211;call God&#8217;s<br \/>\npeople away from violence and toward passionate peacemaking?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:4.5pt\"><span style=\"color:#333333\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:4.5pt\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, a friend sent me a link to a video from Southwestern Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas entitled &#8220;Taking the Hill.&#8221;\u00a0 I thought it might be a political video encouraging conservative Christians to go to Washington to lobby against health care or some such thing.\u00a0 Actually, it was much worse.\u00a0 &#8220;Taking the Hill&#8221;
