In this time of questioning the moral compass of the business community it is nice to see that some students have signed a self imposed a moral code<\/a> for students in MBA programs.\u00a0 <\/span>This summer I spoke at the Chautauqua Institute<\/a> on the Ethics of Capitalism where the question of how to instill values into the business
\ncommunity was being asked from a variety of perspectives.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>I had heard of the MBA oath and
\nmentioned it in the Q&A of my talk.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The tenor of the MBA Oath reminds me of my
\ngreat-grandfather’s short treatise on Love called Dare We Be Christians<\/span> in which he warns that quote: “The
\nseverest test and the most urgent task of love today is in the field of
\nbusiness life. Unless love can dominate the making of wealth, the wealth of our
\nnation will be the ferment of its decay”\u00a0
\n<\/span>Prescient no?<\/span><\/p>\n

Using the well recognized words of love found in
\nPaul in Corinthians,\u00a0 <\/span>Rauschenbusch
\nwarned:<\/span><\/p>\n

“If I
\ncreate wealth beyond the dream of past ages and increase not love, my heat is
\nthe flush of fever and my success will deal death”\u00a0 <\/span>and “Though I have foresight to locate the fountains of
\nriches, and the skill to tap them and yet have no loving vision for humanity, I
\nam blind.”<\/span><\/p>\n

It
\nmakes me very glad to see that morally mature students are attending MBA
\nprograms and see the welfare of the whole of humanity as part of their
\nresponsibility as they become masters of the universe.\u00a0\u00a0Perhaps Ethics and Capitalism are not opposing values after all. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

THE MBA OATH<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

As
\na manager<\/span><\/b>, my purpose is to serve the
\ngreater good by bringing people and resources together to create value that no
\nsingle individual can create alone. Therefore I will seek a course that
\nenhances the value my enterprise can create for society over the long term. <\/b>I
\nrecognize my decisions can have far-reaching consequences that affect the
\nwell-being of individuals inside and outside my enterprise, today and in the
\nfuture. As I reconcile the interests of different constituencies, I will face
\nchoices that are not easy for me and others.<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore
\nI promise:<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>I will<\/span><\/b> act with utmost integrity and pursue my work in
\nan ethical manner.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nco-workers, customers and the society in which we operate.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nagainst decisions and behavior that advance my own narrow ambitions but harm
