{"id":576,"date":"2009-09-02T11:11:19","date_gmt":"2009-09-02T11:11:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/progressiverevival\/2009\/09\/the-mba-oath-and-morally-matur.html"},"modified":"2009-09-02T11:11:19","modified_gmt":"2009-09-02T11:11:19","slug":"the-mba-oath-and-morally-matur","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/progressiverevival\/2009\/09\/the-mba-oath-and-morally-matur.html","title":{"rendered":"The MBA Oath and Morally Mature Capitalism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 15px\"><br \/>\n<!--StartFragment--><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>In this time of questioning the moral compass of the business community it is nice to see that some students have signed a <a href=\"http:\/\/mbaoath.org\/\">self imposed a moral code<\/a> for students in MBA programs.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>This summer I spoke at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ciweb.org\/\">Chautauqua Institute<\/a> on the Ethics of Capitalism where the question of how to instill values into the business<br \/>\ncommunity was being asked from a variety of perspectives.<span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>I had heard of the MBA oath and<br \/>\nmentioned it in the Q&amp;A of my talk.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>The tenor of the MBA Oath reminds me of my<br \/>\ngreat-grandfather&#8217;s short treatise on Love called Dare We Be Christians<\/span><span> in which he warns that quote: &#8220;The<br \/>\nseverest test and the most urgent task of love today is in the field of<br \/>\nbusiness life. Unless love can dominate the making of wealth, the wealth of our<br \/>\nnation will be the ferment of its decay&#8221;<span>\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>Prescient no?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Using the well recognized words of love found in<br \/>\nPaul in Corinthians,<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Rauschenbusch<br \/>\nwarned:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>&#8220;If I<br \/>\ncreate wealth beyond the dream of past ages and increase not love, my heat is<br \/>\nthe flush of fever and my success will deal death&#8221;<span>\u00a0 <\/span>and &#8220;Though I have foresight to locate the fountains of<br \/>\nriches, and the skill to tap them and yet have no loving vision for humanity, I<br \/>\nam blind.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>It<br \/>\nmakes me very glad to see that morally mature students are attending MBA<br \/>\nprograms and see the welfare of the whole of humanity as part of their<br \/>\nresponsibility as they become masters of the universe.<span>\u00a0\u00a0Perhaps Ethics and Capitalism are not opposing values after all. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>See the<br \/>\nMBA Oath Below and take a look at the <a href=\"http:\/\/mbaoath.org\/\">MBA Oath Websit<\/a>e<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:26.0pt\"><b><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:Arial\">Take the Oath<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom:22.0pt;line-height:22.0pt\"><b><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:Georgia\">Please<br \/>\nread the oath below, then click the link at the bottom of the page to continue.<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:Georgia\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:22.0pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:Georgia\">To read a longer<br \/>\nversion of the oath, and to print a pdf copy, click <a href=\"http:\/\/mbaoath.org\/get-involved\/the-mba-oath\"><span style=\"color:#004C93\">here<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:22.0pt\"><b><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:Georgia;color:red\">THE MBA OATH<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom:22.0pt;line-height:22.0pt\"><b><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:Georgia\">As<br \/>\na manager<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:Georgia\">, my purpose is to serve the<br \/>\ngreater good by bringing people and resources together to create value that no<br \/>\nsingle individual can create alone. Therefore I will seek a course that<br \/>\nenhances the value my enterprise can create for society over the long term.<b> <\/b>I<br \/>\nrecognize my decisions can have far-reaching consequences that affect the<br \/>\nwell-being of individuals inside and outside my enterprise, today and in the<br \/>\nfuture. As I reconcile the interests of different constituencies, I will face<br \/>\nchoices that are not easy for me and others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom:22.0pt;line-height:22.0pt\"><b><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:Georgia\">Therefore<br \/>\nI promise:<\/span><\/b><span
