Were any of the Wall Street scam
\nartists and greed mongers who led our country and world into economic meltdown
\nRoman Catholics? \u00a0If so, will they receive communion? \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>The New York Times<\/span><\/a> reports on the Encyclical\u00a0Letter Caritas in Veritate…On Integral
\nHuman Development in Charity and Truth<\/span><\/a>\u00a0released today by the
\nVatican. In it Pope Benedict\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span><\/p>\n

“…called for a radical rethinking of the global
\neconomy, criticizing a growing divide between rich and poor and urging the
\nestablishment of a “world political authority” to oversee the economy and work
\nfor the “common good.” \u00a0He criticized the current economic system, “where
\nthe pernicious effects of sin are evident,” and urged financiers in particular
\nto “rediscover the genuinely ethical foundation of their activity.”<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n


<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/p>\n

I hope for\u00a0consistency\u00a0that the American Catholic Bishops<\/span><\/a> who have gone after \u00a0sinners
\nsuch as pro-choice politicians<\/span><\/a> will also seek out and
\nwithhold communion unrepentant capitalists. \u00a0Unlike the Catholic nuns who are now under inquisition for\u00a0heterodoxy\u00a0of thought<\/a>\u00a0, actions that do not cause actual harm to people, these Catholic\u00a0politicians’\u00a0and business people’s\u00a0sins caused misery and deprivation for millions of\u00a0Americans\u00a0facing home foreclosures and job losses.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Catholic business leaders disregarded basic Roman Catholic teachings on economic justice and caused real harm. \u00a0Yet I have yet to see public\u00a0repentance. \u00a0I look forward to seeing any spiritual\u00a0repercussions\u00a0that the Catholic church might have in store for them including the church’s weapon of choice – no communion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
