{"id":502,"date":"2009-04-21T14:02:05","date_gmt":"2009-04-21T14:02:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/progressiverevival\/2009\/04\/gotcha-miss-california.html"},"modified":"2009-04-21T14:02:05","modified_gmt":"2009-04-21T14:02:05","slug":"gotcha-miss-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/progressiverevival\/2009\/04\/gotcha-miss-california.html","title":{"rendered":"Gotcha Miss California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This morning, Miss California USA told an MSNBC anchor that<br \/>\nshe prays for celebrity blogger Perez Hilton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Not unsolicited charity, her prayers are a response to an<br \/>\nunexpected controversy from Sunday&#8217;s night Miss USA competition.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Miss California was one of five<br \/>\nfinalists for the Miss USA crown when she drew Mr. Hilton&#8217;s question in the<br \/>\nlast phase of the contest.<span>\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>He asked her if she believed in gay marriage and she answered &#8220;no&#8221;<br \/>\n(well, mostly): <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom:8.0pt\"><b><i><span>PEREZ:<\/span><\/i><\/b><i><span> Vermont recently became the fourth state to<br \/>\nlegalize same-sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit? Why or<br \/>\nwhy not?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b><i><span>CARRIE:<\/span><\/i><\/b><i><span> I think it&#8217;s great that Americans are able to<br \/>\nchoose one or the other. We live in a land that you can choose same-sex<br \/>\nmarriage or opposite marriage and, you know what, in my country and my family I<br \/>\nthink that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No<br \/>\noffense to anyone out there but that&#8217;s how I was raised and that&#8217;s how I think<br \/>\nit should be between a man and a woman.<\/span><\/i><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Although it had appeared she might win, Miss California placed second to<br \/>\nMiss North Carolina.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Both her<br \/>\nsupporters and her detractors credited this answer for her loss.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>In the lobby after the competition,<br \/>\nthere was a shouting match between audience members about gay marriage.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Then, Perez Hilton called her &#8220;dumb&#8221;<br \/>\nusing two unflattering words.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>He<br \/>\nseemed initially sorry but then took back his apology.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>She responded by saying that she&#8217;d pray<br \/>\nfor him.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Miss California confessed<br \/>\nthat she was tempted into &#8220;political correctness&#8221; in her answer&#8211;thinking that<br \/>\nthe audience would want the liberal answer&#8211;but instead answered according to<br \/>\nher own true opinions.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>She<br \/>\nbelieves that marriage should be between a man and a woman.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Period.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>That&#8217;s her opinion.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>With the blog-o-sphere abuzz, Miss California has become, according to<br \/>\nliberal commentator Rachel Maddow, &#8220;the Rosa Parks&#8221; of gay marriage&#8211;refusing to<br \/>\nmove to the back of the beauty pageant bus in order to maintain her<br \/>\nintegrity.<span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Or maybe a kind<br \/>\nof anti-gay marriage Martin Luther:<span>\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>Here she stands&#8211;she can do no other.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>But what if Carrie Prejean wasn&#8217;t eliminated because she believes in<br \/>\ntraditional marriage?<span>\u00a0 <\/span>What if she<br \/>\nwas eliminated because she was completely incomprehensible?<span>\u00a0 <\/span>First, she didn&#8217;t seem to know what to<br \/>\ncall traditional marriage&#8211;she contrasted &#8220;same-sex&#8221; marriage with something<br \/>\ncalled &#8220;opposite marriage.&#8221;<span>\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>Second, she praised the fact that in America we can freely choose<br \/>\n&#8220;same-sex marriage&#8221; or &#8220;opposite marriage.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Well, Miss California&#8211;there are two problems with your answer.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I&#8217;m a woman married to a man.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We don&#8217;t call it &#8220;opposite.&#8221;<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We call it &#8220;heterosexual&#8221; or &#8220;traditional&#8221;<br \/>\nmarriage.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We only call it<br \/>\n&#8220;opposite&#8221; when we are fighting over how to fold the laundry (he folds the<br \/>\ntowels in the opposite way I do and they don&#8217;t fit in the closet correctly).<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>But the bigger problem is that Americans don&#8217;t have free choice when it<br \/>\ncomes to marriage.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Only Americans<br \/>\nin four states do.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Free choice<br \/>\nregarding marriage doesn&#8217;t exist in the great state of California&#8211;where it<br \/>\nfleetingly existed&#8211;until people who believe in only one choice (&#8220;opposite&#8221;<br \/>\nmarriage) took away the free choice of people who had hoped for the possibility<br \/>\nof same-sex marriage.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>What you<br \/>\nsaid exists&#8211;free choice&#8211;doesn&#8217;t exist for your fellow gay and lesbian citizens<br \/>\nin California. <span>\u00a0<\/span>Unless, of course,<br \/>\nall the gay people in California move to Vermont.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>They can have free choice there.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>People who hold your opinion negated the possibility for<br \/>\nfree choice for those with a different opinion in your own state.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>No, Miss California, you didn&#8217;t lose because of your opinion.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>You are more than entitled to an<br \/>\ninformed opinion about a controversial issue. <span>\u00a0<\/span>You said you expected a controversial question.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>But <i>you<br \/>\ntripped<\/i>&#8211;like last year&#8217;s Miss USA who fell off her high heels at the Miss<br \/>\nUniverse pageant or that poor Miss South Carolina who blamed geographical<br \/>\nilliteracy on the fact that many Americans were too poor to own maps.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>You aren&#8217;t informed about an issue that<br \/>\ndivides your own state&#8211;and you don&#8217;t realize that you contradicted<br \/>\nyourself.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Political correctness didn&#8217;t<br \/>\nsteal your crown.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>Political ignorance did. <span>\u00a0<\/span>I don&#8217;t like the way the Perez Hilton<br \/>\nresponded to your lack of understanding, but you might take responsibility for<br \/>\nblowing your own chances.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>I feel sorry that Mr. Hilton so clearly had a &#8220;gotcha&#8221; question for<br \/>\nyou.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>You might be wondering why<br \/>\nMiss North Carolina didn&#8217;t get asked about insider political information and<br \/>\nbank runs.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>But that&#8217;s the way beauty<br \/>\ncontests go.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>So, here&#8217;s a friendly<br \/>\npiece of advice:<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Next time someone<br \/>\nasks you a question just reply, &#8220;World peace.&#8221;<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This morning, Miss California USA told an MSNBC anchor that she prays for celebrity blogger Perez Hilton.
