{"id":362,"date":"2009-01-12T12:01:09","date_gmt":"2009-01-12T12:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/progressiverevival\/2009\/01\/bishop-gene-robinson-to-give-p.html"},"modified":"2009-01-12T12:01:09","modified_gmt":"2009-01-12T12:01:09","slug":"bishop-gene-robinson-to-give-p","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/progressiverevival\/2009\/01\/bishop-gene-robinson-to-give-p.html","title":{"rendered":"Bishop Gene Robinson to Give Prayer at Pre-Inaugural Event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The New Hampshire gay Episcopal Bishop, Gene Robinson will offer a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nationworld\/nation\/wire\/sns-ap-gay-bishop-obama,1,6743788.story\"> prayer at the Lincoln Memorial <\/a>on the Sunday before the inauguration. \u00a0This is really great news and seems to me to be an appropriate and brave gesture by the Obama administration. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>It is appropriate because so many of us who were so supportive of Obama during the campaign felt let down by the choice of Warren who wasn&#8217;t just against gay marriage, but someone who worked especially hard to pass Prop 8, and to support anti gay initiatives in other places. \u00a0It is brave because Bishop Robinson is, as an out gay man, also a\u00a0polarizing\u00a0figure, as his ordination has been the reason that churches have been splitting from the Episcopal Church. \u00a0They could have gone with another minister who was pro-gay, but for them to go with a representative of the LGBT community is especially powerful. \u00a0As Bishop Robinson told the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.concordmonitor.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20090112\/FRONTPAGE\/901120347\/1037\/NEWS04\">Concord Monitor<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\"><p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Arial\">&#8220;It&#8217;s important for any minority to see themselves represented in some way,&#8221; Robinson told the newspaper for a story in Monday&#8217;s editions. &#8220;Whether it be a racial minority, an ethnic minority, or in our case, a sexual minority. Just seeing someone like you up front matters.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\"><p><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m wondering, does this satisfy those who were upset by the Warren choice?
