{"id":287,"date":"2008-11-17T09:05:28","date_gmt":"2008-11-17T09:05:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/progressiverevival\/2008\/11\/us-religious-groups-want-obama.html"},"modified":"2008-11-17T09:05:28","modified_gmt":"2008-11-17T09:05:28","slug":"us-religious-groups-want-obama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/progressiverevival\/2008\/11\/us-religious-groups-want-obama.html","title":{"rendered":"Torture is a Moral Issue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: verdana, helvetica, sans;margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 1em;margin-left: 0px;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px\">We know President Elect Obama is pragmatic and reaches across the aisle, but this seems like a no brainer. \u00a0The army, religious people and decent Americans agree &#8211; we must stop torturing people<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\"><p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">CHICAGO (Reuters) &#8211; A coalition of more than 200 religious groups urged U.S. President-elect\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/news\/globalcoverage\/barackobama\" title=\"More on Barack Obama's campaign for the 2008 Election\">Barack Obama<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday to sign an order, once he takes office, banning torture by any federal government entity.<\/span><br \/><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">&#8220;This is an opportunity where one official could &#8230; with one stroke of a pen, really change history here,&#8221; said Linda Gustitus, president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrcat.org\/\">National Religious Campaign Against Torture.<\/a><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\"><p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><br \/><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">The group, which has been pressing the issue since 2006, also wants the U.S. Congress to establish a special committee to investigate the use of what the Bush administration has called &#8220;enhanced interrogation techniques&#8221; used on terrorism suspects detained after the attacks of September 11, 2001.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\"><p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><br \/><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">President George W. Bush has said the United States does not practice torture. But the Central Intelligence Agency has admitted using waterboarding, a form of simulated drowning, on three occasions. Critics consider waterboarding torture.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\"><p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><br \/><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">&#8220;We want a full accounting,&#8221;
