{"id":16,"date":"2008-07-29T17:23:23","date_gmt":"2008-07-29T17:23:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/progressiverevival\/2008\/07\/common-good-revival.html"},"modified":"2008-07-29T17:23:23","modified_gmt":"2008-07-29T17:23:23","slug":"common-good-revival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/progressiverevival\/2008\/07\/common-good-revival.html","title":{"rendered":"Common Good Revival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;color: black\">There is a new<br \/>\nfaith movement afoot in the public square, and this new blog is certainly one<br \/>\nindicator.&nbsp; This movement seeks wisdom from the idea of the common good &#8211;<br \/>\ncentral to in my Catholic tradition, and many other faith traditions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;color: black\"> The first-ever national<br \/>\nConvention for the Common Good<i> <\/i>&#8211; now the<i> <\/i><\/span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.votethecommongood.com\/\"><b><span style=\"color: purple\">Campaign<br \/>\nfor the Common Good<\/span><\/b><\/a><\/span><b><span style=\"font-family: Arial;color: black\">,<\/span><\/b><i><span style=\"font-family: Arial;color: black\"> <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-family: Arial;color: black\">is another sign that this movement is<br \/>\nmaking an impact<i>. <\/i>Twenty Catholic social justice organizations and 800<br \/>\ndelegates came to Philadelphia<br \/>\nlast month to restore the idea of government for the common good and &#8216;we the<br \/>\npeople.&#8217;&nbsp;&nbsp;The event was hailed&nbsp;described as a <\/span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dioceseoftrenton.org\/department\/news_detail.asp?newsid=1902\"><span style=\"color: purple\">&#8220;historic gathering of Catholics&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;color: black\"> in Trenton&#8217;s<br \/>\nCatholic newspaper, <i>The Monitor. <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;color: black\">From the first<br \/>\npapal encyclical on down, government&#8217;s very reason for existence is to ensure<br \/>\nthe common good.&nbsp;&nbsp; The Convention delegates were inspired by both the<br \/>\nwisdom of the Catholic social tradition and the values at the heart of our US<br \/>\nConstitution.&nbsp;&nbsp; Delegates produced a <\/span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.votethecommongood.com\/\"><span style=\"color: purple\">Platform for the Common Good<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;color: black\"> that addresses issues relevant in<br \/>\nElection 2008 as diverse as health care, immigration, a consistent culture of<br \/>\nlife, global climate change and peace-building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;color: black\">At Mass on<br \/>\nSunday, our parish priest gave&nbsp;his usual&nbsp;excellent<br \/>\nhomily.&nbsp;&nbsp; Fr. Jim incorporated the story of King Solomon and how he<br \/>\nasked God &#8211; among all things &#8212;&nbsp; for an &#8220;understanding<br \/>\nheart.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp; Solomon requested an understanding heart so that he<br \/>\ncould <b>govern <\/b>with wisdom.&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;color: black\">My hope is that<br \/>\nour politicians are listening to the powerful voices shaping this resurgent<br \/>\ncommon good faith movement that offers prophetic wisdom and common ground<br \/>\nsolutions to some of our most urgent moral and political challenges. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is a new faith movement afoot in the public square, and this new blog is certainly one indicator.&nbsp; This movement seeks wisdom from the idea of the common good &#8211; central to in my Catholic tradition, and many other faith traditions. Kelley has served in diverse capacities in non-profit organizations committed to poverty reduction, social justice, and the environment. She worked for nearly a decade at the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, the Catholic Church's national anti-poverty program. Kelley is the co-editor of Living the Catholic Social Tradition: Cases and Commentary (Sheed and Ward 2004) with Dr. Kathleen Maas Weigert. The book examines how low-income led, anti-poverty organizations funded by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development put Catholic social justice teachings into action. She is co-author of a forthcoming book, A Nation For All: How the Catholic Vision of the Common Good Can Save America from the Politics of Division (Spring 2008) to be published by Jossey Bass. She is also the author of Call to Family, Community, and Participation, an education booklet in a Catholic social teaching series published by US Conference of Catholic Bishops. Kelley has a B.A. in Religion with honors from Haverford College and a Master of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School with a focus on Christianity and Culture. Kelley serves on the Board of Directors of the Providence Hospital Foundation and was a founding Board member of Language, Education and Technology Center, an adult literacy\/ESL program at Our Lady Queen of the Americas parish in Washington, DC. Kelley served as a delegate to the 2007 Vatican's Second World Congress of Ecclesial Organizations Working for Justice and Peace in Rome.
