{"id":112,"date":"2008-09-02T22:57:14","date_gmt":"2008-09-02T22:57:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/progressiverevival\/2008\/09\/sounding-the-alarm-darfur-elul.html"},"modified":"2008-09-02T22:57:14","modified_gmt":"2008-09-02T22:57:14","slug":"sounding-the-alarm-darfur-elul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/progressiverevival\/2008\/09\/sounding-the-alarm-darfur-elul.html","title":{"rendered":"Sounding the Alarm: Darfur, Elul, and the Presidential Election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Today is the third day of the Hebrew month of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/myjewishlearning.com\/holidays\/Rosh_Hashana\/Overview_High_Holidays\/Elul_213.htm\">Elul<\/a><\/i><span style=\"font-style:normal\">.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>This<br \/>\nis the last month of the Jewish calendar, a time of sustained introspection in<br \/>\npreparation for Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur (the Day of<br \/>\nAtonement).<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Among the special<br \/>\nrituals enacted during Elul is the sounding of the <\/span><i>shofar<\/i><span style=\"font-style:normal\"> (ram&#8217;s horn) following morning prayers.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>This ancient ritual is designed to<br \/>\nawaken us to <\/span><i>teshuvah<\/i><span style=\"font-style:normal\">, to<br \/>\nspiritual return, during this season of renewal.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">When I sounded the shofar this morning, my thoughts turned<br \/>\nto Darfur, Sudan.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>As has been<br \/>\nwidely reported in the media, the Sudanese government and its proxy militia,<br \/>\nthe <span style=\"font-family:ArialMT\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.genocideintervention.net\/educate\/darfur\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';color: windowtext\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"text-decoration: none\">Janjaweed<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span>, have carried out a brutal<br \/>\nscorched-earth campaign against their opponents in the western province of <span style=\"font-family:ArialMT\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.genocideintervention.net\/educate\/darfur\/faq#whatisDarfur\"><span>Darfur<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>This genocidal rampage has involved the burning of homes and<br \/>\ncrops, the destruction of wells and granaries, and the rape, torture, and<br \/>\nmurder of countless civilians.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>The<br \/>\nviolence in Darfur has led to the displacement of approximately two and a half<br \/>\nmillion people and the death of hundreds of thousands of others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Despite mounds of evidence, international leaders have been<br \/>\nunwilling to take the necessary steps to stop the crisis in Darfur.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>China has been Khartoum&#8217;s most<br \/>\nsignificant ally, repeatedly using its veto power as a permanent member of the<br \/>\nUN Security Council to prevent the passage of strong measures against the<br \/>\nSudanese government.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>While China<br \/>\ndid support a 2007 Security Council resolution calling for the deployment of a<br \/>\nhybrid UN-African Union peacekeeping force to Darfur, Beijing weakened that<br \/>\nresolution before it was passed. China also doubled its trade with Sudan in<br \/>\n2007 and, in violation of a UN arms embargo, continues to supply Khartoum with<br \/>\nweapons used to perpetrate violence against innocent Darfuris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Beijing is not, of course, the only international power<br \/>\nimplicated in the genocide. Though its actions are particularly despicable,<br \/>\nother world leaders have failed the Darfuris.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>As an American citizen, I am deeply disappointed with<br \/>\nPresident Bush and his administration. While the President was one of the first<br \/>\nheads of state to name the crisis in Darfur a genocide and, with Congress, has<br \/>\nsupported substantial funding for relief aid, he has not demonstrated the kind<br \/>\nof consistent engagement necessary to help end the genocide in western Sudan.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Bogged down by the war in Iraq and<br \/>\nother political misadventures, the President has not used the bully pulpit<br \/>\neffectively to create a strong international coalition to properly address this<br \/>\ncrisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As the contest for the next American president intensifies,<br \/>\nwe must insist that senators McCain and Obama pledge to make Darfur a priority<br \/>\nif elected.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>There are several<br \/>\ncritical steps that the new president will need to take in the coming months:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<ul style=\"margin-top:0in\" type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Work<br \/>\naggressively with the UN Security Council to deploy the full peacekeeping<br \/>\nforce promised in July 2007, including the equipment and logistical<br \/>\nsupport to carry out their mission effectively.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<ul style=\"margin-top:0in\" type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Do<br \/>\neverything in his power to persuade China, Sudan&#8217;s most important economic<br \/>\nand political ally, to play a constructive role in helping end the<br \/>\ngenocide in Darfur.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<ul style=\"margin-top:0in\" type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Continue<br \/>\nto provide the people of Darfur with the necessary supplies to endure in<br \/>\nrefugee and displaced persons camps.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<ul style=\"margin-top:0in\" type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Advance<br \/>\na sustainable peace for all Sudan, including a viable peace process for<br \/>\nDarfur and increased support to uphold the Comprehensive Peace Agreement<br \/>\nin southern Sudan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<ul style=\"margin-top:0in\" type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Work<br \/>\nwith the international community to bring to justice all those who are<br \/>\nguilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Hebrew month of Elul is a time for individual and<br \/>\ncommunal reflection, a time to honestly assess our actions over the past year,<br \/>\nand to set our goals and priorities for the coming year.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>When we sound the shofar each morning,<br \/>\nwe attempt to stir ourselves anew to become agents of justice and compassion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the spirit of Elul, I pray that during this historic<br \/>\nelection season people of conscience throughout the country&#8211;Jews and non-Jews,<br \/>\nreligious and secular, Democrats and Republicans&#8211;engage with renewed commitment<br \/>\nin the struggle to save Darfur, calling on the next president to dedicate<br \/>\nhimself to ending the pain and suffering of the people of western Sudan.<span>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today is the third day of the Hebrew month of Elul.\u00a0 This is the last month of the Jewish calendar, a time of sustained introspection in preparation for Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement).\u00a0 Among the special rituals enacted during Elul is the sounding of the shofar (ram&#8217;s&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":162,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1,18,15],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-112","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-election-08","category-international-relations","category-jews"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
