And Mark Harman&#8217;s complex, quietly heroic Leroy Jethro Gibbs in <em>&#8220;NCIS&#8221;<\/em> brings me back every week.<\/p>\n<p>But Caviezel is, to me, <em>uniquely<\/em> worth respect. In practicing his art, he has not been afraid to incorporate his faith; and when Hollywood has tried to force him to compromise, he would not.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_732\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-732\" style=\"width: 165px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/preacherskid\/files\/2011\/10\/jimjesus.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-732 \" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/279\/2011\/10\/jimjesus-206x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"165\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-732\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Passion role: Caviezel paid the price<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That meant, in 2004, taking on the role of Jesus in<em><a title=\" &quot;The Passion of the Christ,&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thepassionofchrist.com\/splash.htm\" target=\"_blank\"> &#8220;The Passion of the Christ,&#8221;<\/a><\/em> Mel Gibson&#8217;s stunningly beautiful, and disturbing for its graphic portrayal of crucifixion, movie about the Nazarene rabbi&#8217;s final hours &#8212; and ultimate triumph.<\/p>\n<p>Caviezel took the role even after Gibson tried to give him an out. Gibson, who has had his own challenges &#8212; <em>because of &#8220;Passion&#8221;, and more because of his own demons<\/em> &#8212; was genuinely worried about the Caviezel&#8217;s future in film because of the inevitable backlash from being front and center of an unapologetic, faithful recounting of Christ&#8217;s suffering.<\/p>\n<p>Such honesty about the life &#8212; and death &#8212; of Jesus is politically incorrect these days. And Gibson warned Caviezel that Hollywood would exact a price. Today, Caviezel acknowledges he has, indeed, paid the price. The star of previous, successful films like <em>&#8220;Angel Eyes,&#8221; &#8220;Frequency&#8221;<\/em> and <em>&#8220;The Count of Monte Cristo&#8221;<\/em> found it hard to get work.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We all have to embrace our crosses,&#8221;<\/em> Caviezel, a devout Catholic, <a title=\"recently told \" href=\"http:\/\/news.softpedia.com\/news\/Jesus-Ruined-My-Acting-Career-in-Hollywood-Jim-Caviezel-Laments-198017.shtml\" target=\"_blank\"><em>recently told<\/em> <\/a>an Orlando, Florida church.<em> &#8216;Jesus is as controversial now as he has ever been. . . . Not much has changed in 2,000 years.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So, when I saw Caviezel would star in the new CBS series<em><a title=\" &quot;Person of Interest,&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KK4YuIf2cIg\" target=\"_blank\"> &#8220;Person of Interest,&#8221;<\/a><\/em> I decided to watch. I did it, admittedly, out of a desire to pay back some small measure of respect for a fellow believer. But I became hooked by Caviezel&#8217;s understated, world-weary portrayal of John Reese, an ex-Green Beret\/CIA field officer thought dead, found homeless by an enigmatic billionaire computer genius &#8212; and given purpose as a sort of preemptive crime fighter.<\/p>\n<p>So, I celebrated when CBS this week decided to reward <em>&#8220;Person of Interest&#8221;<\/em> with a <em><a title=\"full-season order.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1118045031?refCatId=14\" target=\"_blank\">full-season order.<\/a><\/em> No surprise there, since the show quickly became one of the network&#8217;s most-watched new series, along with the hit series <em>&#8220;Unforgettable.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I hope Caviezel&#8217;s resurgence is a long, successful one.<\/p>\n<p><em>Sometimes, good things really should happen to good people, after all.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Actor Jim Caviezel is one of my favorite actors, a short list that includes, for varying reasons, Tom Selleck, Russell Crowe and Mark Harman.
