First off, let&#8217;s be clear:<\/em> I take a philosophical back seat to no one in promoting the right of any American to worship <em>\u2014 or not<\/em> \u2014 the God or gods or Force or assorted plants, celestial bodies, etc., of their choice.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_227\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-227\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/279\/2011\/08\/atheistsign1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-227 \" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/279\/2011\/08\/atheistsign1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"157\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-227\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of signs in campaign promoting atheism<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And if they don&#8217;t believe in any of those things, I <em>don&#8217;t<\/em> have a problem with them putting up<em> <a title=\"billboards\" href=\"http:\/\/cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/11\/29\/for-the-holidays-an-atheism-billboard\/\" target=\"_blank\">billboards<\/a><\/em>, carrying signs or shouting from the public square their convictions as atheists or agnostics, either.<\/p>\n<p><em>This is America<\/em>. Within our Constitution and the Bill of Rights are guarantees for<em><a title=\"both\" href=\"http:\/\/www.religioustolerance.org\/amend_1.htm\" target=\"_blank\"> both <\/a><\/em>the practice and energetic espousal <em>of <\/em>religion, and freedom <em>from<\/em> religious persecution &#8212; whether against a particular group of believers, or those who do not believe.<\/p>\n<p>But the pendulum has swung crazily too far when it comes to cries of <em>&#8220;<a title=\"separation of church and state\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allabouthistory.org\/separation-of-church-and-state.htm\" target=\"_blank\">separation of church and state&#8221;<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and <em>every<\/em> American&#8217;s right &#8212; even those running for elective offices &#8212; to live by their religious principles and <em>express them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Case in point:<\/em> This weekend&#8217;s <a title=\"stadium prayer event\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/news\/politics\/article\/30-000-heed-Perry-s-call-for-prayer-1751836.php\" target=\"_blank\"><em>stadium prayer event<\/em><\/a>\u00a0spearheaded by Texas Gov. Rick Perry. He had, apparently, the audacity to look at the nation&#8217;s dismal state &#8212; a black hole of rising debt that led to an historic loss of the country&#8217;s top credit rating, deep unemployment, wars that continue to bleed us of lives and treasure, and a seeming crisis of morals <em>and<\/em> morale &#8212; and call for <em>believers<\/em> to fast, repent and pray for America.<\/p>\n<p>And, as if throwing gasoline on the already self-immolating critics that arose, he and others had the gall to close their prayers with mention of<em> Jesus.<\/em> That is what Christians, do, you know \u2013 invoke the name of the founder and namesake of their faith. People of other faiths were invited, too. Perhaps there was a conspicuous absence by non-Christians, but that was a choice, too.<\/p>\n<p>But I wonder: would that be any less \u201coffensive\u201d had a Muslim taken the stage to open a public prayer\u00a0<em>with \u201cIn the name of Allah, the most beneficent\u201d<\/em> and closing them with <em>\u201cO Allah! Accept our invocation&#8221;? \u00a0<\/em>Or, for that matter, a Rastafarian&#8217;s <em>\u201cBlessed is the name of Our Lord God Jah Ras Tafari,\u201d<\/em> a Hindu\u2019s <em>\u201cWe worship the three-eyed One, Lord Shiva,\u201d<\/em> a Buddhist proclaiming <em>\u201cI take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the supreme Sangha,\u201d<\/em> a Native American punctuating ritual smoke with <em>\u201cO Great Spirit of our ancestors, I raise my pipe to you,\u201d <\/em>or a Wiccan chanting <em>\u201cHoly Earth Mother, flesh of the world. . . .\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_228\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-228\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/preacherskid\/files\/2011\/08\/prayerrally.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-228  \" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/279\/2011\/08\/prayerrally-e1312813046887-300x213.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-228\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Texas prayer rally drew 30,000<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A chief executive &#8212; of a state or of our nation &#8211;bringing 30,000 fellow believers to pray in an arena may seem over-the-top today, but leaders calling <em>willing<\/em> citizens to prayer is hardly new. In our increasingly secularized age, though, anyone who believes in moral absolutes, supports \u00a0traditional marriage or abhors the millions of potential lives lost to abortion (both<em><a title=\"interfaith\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/comm\/archives\/2010\/10-228.shtml\" target=\"_blank\"> interfaith<\/a><\/em> issues, by the way) gets labeled\u00a0<em>&#8220;hater.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0Disagree with those stands? <em>No problem, speak out.<\/em> But it seems when it comes to sharing faith and its values, well, that justifies a tsunami of hyperbole and calls for repression from a vocal minority.<\/p>\n<p><em>It\u2019s that pesky Constitution and Bill of Rights again<\/em>, protecting the rights of people to have and express faith<em>, or disbelief<\/em>, by<a title=\"http:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/news\/politics\/article\/30-000-heed-Perry-s-call-for-prayer-1751836.php\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Freedom_of_association\" target=\"_blank\"><em> freely associating<\/em> <\/a>and having their place in the public dialog, too.<\/p>\n<p>Officially, presidents have called for a <em><a title=\"National Day of Prayer\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Day_of_Prayer\" target=\"_blank\">National Day of Prayer<\/a><\/em> every first Thursday in May since 1952. Historically, though, such calls to prayer and fasting go back to George Washington. His successor, President John Adams, renewed that call in 1798. Civil War President Abraham Lincoln, in 1863, called for a day of &#8220;national humiliation, fasting and prayer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 1952, President Harry S. Truman institutionalized the Day of Prayer when he signed legislation establishing the annual practice. It has been honored by <em>all<\/em> succeeding presidents, to varying degrees, since then.<\/p>\n<p>In April of this year, a federal appellate court unanimously dismissed a challenge to the Day of Prayer&#8217;s constitutionality, though the <em>Freedom From Religion Foundation<\/em> continues to attack the event with new filings.<\/p>\n<p><em>Freedom of association, freedom of expression and freedom of, and from, religion.<\/em> Believer or skeptic, those rights apply to all.<\/p>\n<p>And there&#8217;s this, too: We <em>all<\/em> have the freedom to <em>not <\/em>listen or participate or be bludgeoned into accepting either someone&#8217;s faith &#8212; or someone&#8217;s dismissal of faith.<\/p>\n<p><em>In America, that&#8217;s a choice.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OK.
