Is it &#8216;obvious&#8217; who is, and why?"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_156\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-156\" style=\"width: 186px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/preacherskid\/files\/2011\/07\/earhardt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-156\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/279\/2011\/07\/earhardt-300x268.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"186\" height=\"165\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-156\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cFox &amp; Friends\u201d host Ainsley Earhardt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So, that bastion of truth, fairness and letting us \u201cdecide,\u201d Rupert Murdock\u2019s Fox News \u2013 or more precisely, <em>\u201cFox &amp; Friends\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 host Ainsley Earhardt &#8212; recently declared that Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney is <a title=\"\u201cobviously not . . . a Christian.\u201d\" href=\"http:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/mitt-romney-obviously-not-a-christian-fox-news-host-says-52430\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>\u201cobviously not . . . a Christian.\u201d<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mitt Romney is a Mormon, a member <em>of <a title=\"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/Faiths\/2001\/06\/What-Latter-Day-Saints-Mormons-Believe.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints<\/a><\/em><a title=\"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/Faiths\/2001\/06\/What-Latter-Day-Saints-Mormons-Believe.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">.<\/a> So, OK, it\u2019s tough to get all that out in one breath. He\u2019s not Catholic, Orthodox, Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist, Pentecostal (though <a title=\"Mormons do accept speaking in tongues\" href=\"http:\/\/www.frontiernet.net\/~bcmmin\/tongue1.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Mormons do accept speaking in tongues<\/em><\/a>), Adventist, Presbyterian, Anglican, Quaker, Shaker, Mennonite, Amish . . . all easily declared in the space of a single heartbeat.<\/p>\n<p>But <em>obviously not . . . a Christian?<\/em> At various times, each of those professions of Christian faith \u00a0mentioned above (<em>LDS included<\/em>) have, and some still do, claim to be either the <a title=\"&quot;the one true church&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/carm.org\/questions\/about-church\/which-church-one-true-church\" target=\"_blank\"><em>\u201cone true church\u201d<\/em><\/a> or in possession of a more perfect expression of the Gospel.<\/p>\n<p>They divide over whether God has a body, physical or spiritual; whether<a title=\"&quot;baptism&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baptism\" target=\"_blank\"><em> baptism<\/em><\/a> is by immersion (<em>and whether one dunk will do, or three is required for each member of the <a title=\"Trinity\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/15047a.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Trinity<\/a><\/em>), sprinkling or splashing; whether there is a Trinity, or what the Trinity is if so; whether salvation comes by baptism, or as a preceding act of faith; whether believers are called to pacifism or militant patriotism; whether scriptural interpretation is individual or entrusted to clerics; whether Christ\u2019s presence in rite of communion is symbolic or real . . . <em>and on and on.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As a preacher\u2019s kid, I watched my Pentecostal father <em>(cursed as he was with intellectual honesty<\/em>) gradually draw his circle of what and who was \u201cChristian\u201d wider and in theological pencil <em>(with the eraser of reason nearby<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Oh, he never abandoned the basic tenets of charismatic, evangelistic Christianity; he did, however, embrace others who looked above and beyond denominational walls with a desire to <em>live,<\/em> not just talk the gospel among their fellow humans.<\/p>\n<p><em>You know<\/em>. Being the healing hands, not the clenched fists, of Christ. Speaking the truth in love, not shouting angry judgment. Praying for those who misuse and defame you, not using \u201crighteousness\u201d as an excuse for character assassination or retribution. Maybe, along with getting red-faced and screaming one\u2019s self hoarse over abortion, also stepping up to adopt those babies from desperate teenaged girls.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s final pastorate was a community church, a neighborhood congregation of Lutherans, Baptists, Methodists, the occasional Catholic and a handful of Pentecostals. As he neared retirement, he would smile slightly when asked which of the Christian sects would <em>\u201cmake it to heaven.\u201d<\/em> One time, I was the one asking that question.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI think we\u2019ll all be surprised, when we get there, who else is there, too,\u201d<\/em> he said. Dad talked about God\u2019s compassion and judgment being beyond our comprehension; that the Creator had a unique, unfettered understanding of the <em>intentions of each person\u2019s heart<\/em>. And then, from these cosmic theological heights, my father, the preacher, recalled his between-churches job in <em>\u201cthe world,\u201d<\/em> i.e. department store window display.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIn the end, all that stuff \u2013 the things we Christians argue about \u2013 is just window dressing. It won\u2019t matter as much as the window, what the Lord wanted us to see and wanted us to do with it,\u201d<\/em> Dad said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_157\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-157\" style=\"width: 237px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/preacherskid\/files\/2011\/07\/Mitt-Romney.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-157\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/279\/2011\/07\/Mitt-Romney-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"237\" height=\"142\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-157\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mitt Romney<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>So, back to Mitt Romney.<\/em> Or fellow GOP presidential candidate Jon Huntsman, also raised a Latter-day Saint. Or any of the world\u2019s other 14 million Mormons. <em>Are Mormons \u201cChristians?\u201d<\/em> Are Catholics, Baptists, Lutherans, Pentecostals, etc., \u201cChristians?\u201d Forget the labels. <em>Look to the heart<\/em>. Look to what <em>individual <\/em>believers of all or any sect do, not just say.<\/p>\n<p>More to the point, does having <a title=\"a Christian president\" href=\"http:\/\/www.adherents.com\/adh_presidents.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>a Christian president<\/em><\/a> mean much? Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, George Bush(es) and yes, Barack Obama, all have claimed the \u201cChristian\u201d mantle. All of those men had or have their detractors for reasons political, moral and doctrinal. In the end, we still have seen inspiring leadership and moral failure, peacemakers and warmakers.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus put it this way: <em>\u201c. . . \u2018Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.
