Psalm<\/em> 51 is the gold standard for contrite confession. David is broken by the weight of his sin. Only then can he truly repent. This last week Lance Armstrong came clean, admitting that he’d used performing enhancing drugs and that he’d lied about it for years, to millions of people. Is he contrite? We can’t know the full measure of his heart, but we can line up the images we have seen and the language we’ve heard him speak against this standard of scripture.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Psalm<\/em> 51<\/span><\/h3>\n

For the choir director: A psalm of David, regarding the time Nathan the prophet came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.<\/h4>\n
\n

1 <\/sup>Have mercy on me, O God,
\nbecause of your unfailing love.
\nBecause of your great compassion,
\nblot out the stain of my sins.
\n2 <\/sup>Wash me clean from my guilt.
\nPurify me from my sin.
\n3 <\/sup>For I recognize my rebellion;
\nit haunts me day and night.
\n4 <\/sup>Against you, and you alone, have I sinned;
\nI have done what is evil in your sight.
\nYou will be proved right in what you say,
\nand your judgment against me is just.[a<\/a>]<\/sup>

\nYou will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.

\nrebuild the walls of Jerusalem.
