Talk turned to Whitney Houston\u2019s recent death. They all agreed: it was so sad. \u201cI feel sorriest for Whitney\u2019s mother<\/em>\u201d Sandi said. \u201cNo, it\u2019s probably a bigger heartache for Whitney\u2019s daughter<\/em>\u201d Barb replied. Karen joined in from her pedi perch, \u201cMaybe not, it can\u2019t have been easy having Whitney has your Mom. Hopefully she is relieved knowing her Mommy is finally at peace<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sandi told the women about her friend\u2019s daughter who is so messed up on drugs that her teeth are rotten. The children shuttle back and forth between grandma and mom, depending on the daughter\u2019s state of addiction. \u201cIt\u2019s heartbreaking. I was at her wedding twelve years ago. She was loving, smart and straight<\/em>.\u201d You figure once your grown kids settle down, the worst is over. But here it is years later and Sandi has watched her friend\u2019s daughter turn from beautiful bride to hideous monster.<\/p>\n

Whitney talk turned personal, from L.A. celebrity gossip to news of someone\u2019s near and dearest gone bad. Karen wanted to know if the girl was \u201cone of their own.\u201d She poked cautiously around the question, \u201cIs this a girl who lives around here?<\/em>\u201d Sandi gave her the answer she wanted to hear. \u201cNo, this is a work friend who lives across town.<\/em>\u201d Phew. Far away\u2014 their little suburban fortress remains untouched.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re all God\u2019s children, the scholars and the junkies. Rest in peace Whitney Houston. May the demons you left behind, leave our children alone. And let us see the day when there is an end to the evils of addiction.<\/p>\n
