\"\"<\/a>A Jewish congregation was arguing over whether one should stand or sit during the Shema Yisroel. Half of the congregation said one should sit, the other half insisted one should stand. Every time the Shema was recited they shouted at each other, \u201cSit down!\u201d and \u201cStand up!\u201d\u00a0 The fighting became so bad that the congregation was split in two, each half contending that they knew the tradition in that synagogue.<\/p>\n

Finally, the rabbi decided to visit a one hundred year old member of the synagogue who was living in a nursing home. He took a delegation from each of the arguing sides with him to see the oldest member of the \u201cshul\u201d.\u00a0 \u201cNow, tell us,\u201d said the rabbi, \u201cwhat is our tradition?\u201d \u201cShould we stand during the Shema?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cNo,\u201d said the old man. \u201cThat is not our tradition.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWell, then,\u201d said the rabbi, \u201c should we sit during the Shema?\u201d \u201cNo,\u201d the old man, \u201cthat is not our tradition.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cBut we need to know what to do,\u201d said the rabbi, \u201cbecause our congregation members are fighting among each other.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cThat,\u201d said the oldest member of the congregation, \u201cthat is our tradition.\u201d<\/p>\n
