They dared to defy the Chinese Communist Party. Beijing suppresses any religious activity outside the control of the Communist Party.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the congregation&#8217;s leaders have been\u00a0under house arrest for over two months.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the 1,000-member church have gathered in a public square to pray every Sunday, since April 10, after\u00a0authorities pressured landlords of the various facilities they have rented to close their doors to the church.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/on_the_front_lines_of_the_culture_wars\/?p=1346\">\ufeffTo read about the Chinese government&#8217;s escalating persecution of Beijing&#8217;s Shouwang Church CLICK HERE<\/a><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Pastor Jin Tian Ming, founder of the church, who has been under house arrest for nine weeks, says the police have detained hundreds of members. Before the June 4\u00a0anniversary of the 1989\u00a0Tiananmen Square massacre, dozens of the faithful were summoned by police and either threatened or placed under house arrest.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/on_the_front_lines_of_the_culture_wars\/2011\/04\/why-is-china-persecuting-the-church.html\">To watch a video smuggled out of China about the underground church, CLICK HERE<\/a><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The goal, says AsiaNews, was to prevent any kind of protests or public meetings.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_757\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-757\" style=\"width: 430px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/217\/2011\/06\/china-arrests.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-757\" title=\"china arrests\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/217\/2011\/06\/china-arrests.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"430\" height=\"314\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-757\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Christian leader in official custody<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Police have also targeted the personal lives of some followers with threats of losing their jobs. Jin said that four leaders of the church, including a pastor and two deacons, have distanced themselves from the decision to meet to pray in the streets. In a letter to the faithful, Jin said that &#8220;our colleagues&#8217; departure has shaken the whole church, like an earthquake.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, the church purchased an entire floor of a high-rise building, but the authorities have blocked its being used.<\/p>\n<p>Why such efforts against a harmless bunch of Christians? For years, the Communist government has targetted home-based churches in an attempt assimilate them into the Three-Self Patriotic Movement Church, which is controlled by the Communist Party. Pastors are paid by the Party, which approves their sermons beforehand. Any Three-Self pastor who is successful in building up attendance or establishing effective programs is transferred to distant, rural congregations and placed under the supervision of a pastor who will keep things in check.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/pray_for_the_persecuted_church\/?p=591\">CLICK HERE to read\u00a0a\u00a0smuggled-out account of\u00a0one woman&#8217;s\u00a048 hours in police custody<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As the campaign against Shouwang continues, the China Aid Association, U.S.-based group of expatriate Chinese Christians,\u00a0denounced the &#8220;administrative&#8221; arrest of pastor Enhao Shi, Vice President of Chinese House Church Alliance. He was\u00a0held for 12 days at the Suqian prison in Jiangsu.<\/p>\n<p>Even Meiling Chang, also a follower of the CHCA, was sent to 12 days of administrative detention imposed without trial.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_758\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-758\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/217\/2011\/06\/chinese-christians-singing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-758\" title=\"chinese-christians-singing\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/217\/2011\/06\/chinese-christians-singing.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"339\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-758\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Chinese Christian lifts her hands in an underground service<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In China is estimated there are far more unofficial Protestant Christians (as many as 80 million to 120 million) than there are members of the Three-Self Patriotic Movement Church, which officially has 20 million. Beijing fears that any movement not controlled by the Party could trigger a &#8220;jasmine revolution&#8221; similar to the one that is rocking the North Africa and the Middle East.
