Also making the list are\u00a0\u00a0Egypt, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34\" style=\"width: 196px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/pray_for_the_persecuted_church\/files\/2011\/03\/john-pontifex2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34 \" title=\"john-pontifex\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/217\/2011\/03\/john-pontifex2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"269\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">John Pontifex<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While persecution\u00a0is terrible in countries where\u00a0Islamic extremists are on the rise, the report notes that Christians are harassed in Burma, India, and Sri Lanka as well &#8212; where militant Hindus and Buddhists have resorted to violence against Christians, said\u00a0<strong>John Pontifex<\/strong>, organization spokesman.<\/p>\n<p>Politics are sometimes an issue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As they are in most cases unable to attack Western countries direct, many extremists turn their fire on local Christians,&#8221; he said &#8212; as extremists equate Christianity with the western world.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31\" style=\"width: 218px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/217\/2011\/03\/annewiddecombews.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31\" title=\"annewiddecombews\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/217\/2011\/03\/annewiddecombews.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"218\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ann Widdecombe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Ann Widdecombe,<\/strong> a British Member of Parliament for 23 years, said she is &#8220;increasingly alarmed&#8221; by reports of violence and intimidation against Christians. She criticized the British government&#8217;s efforts to protect the rights of religious minorities and its tendency to turn a blind eye to persecution of Christians overseas.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is time to put our heads above the parapet and speak up in the name of Christians suffering for their faith,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I am delighted to support the work of Aid to the Church in Need, which is doing excellent work to help persecuted Christians.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Keith O&#8217;Brien,\u00a0the UK&#8217;s Catholic Cardinal from Edinburgh recently described persecution of Christians as &#8220;perhaps the biggest human rights scandal of our generation.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seventy five percent of religious persecution in the world is against Christians, reports a British watchdog group, which says 100 million Christians are facing official oppression.
