“Our Christ sacrificed His life on the cross for our sins. … Our Christ is alive,” those are the words that Asia Bibi, a wife and mother, used to defend her faith against mocking co-workers who tried to make her convert to Islam.
She was later convicted of blasphemy and sentenced to death.
In Pakistan, more than 150,000 Christians have signed a petition demanding justice for persecution victims, including Asia Bibi.
The Voice of the Martyrs, an Oklahoma-based advocacy group for persecuted Christians is calling for her release. “We hope to gather 1 million signatures on behalf of our sister Asia, who now sits in prison awaiting the Lahore High Court’s ruling on her appeal,” according to their website. “Every signature is a call for mercy.”
Voice of the Martyrs says it will deliver the petition to the Pakistani Embassy in Washington, D.C.
As of August 11, the group reported gathering 216,848 signatures, including 150,081 from Pakistan, 55,086 from the United States, 2,047 from Canada and 1,491 from Australia — with the rest from such countries as Nigeria, Germany, India and New Zealand.
