Don&#8217;t be afraid of spiritual experiences. Strange sensations<br \/>\nof energy, a feeling of deep love, vulnerability, connectedness, a loss of ego<br \/>\nand control are all aspects of spiritual experience that test and try people&#8217;s<br \/>\nlimits. Such profound and healing encounters can trigger fear and resistance.<br \/>\nPeople doubt what they don&#8217;t know, they resist what they don&#8217;t understand, and<br \/>\nthey cling to what is familiar. It is a longing for safety that sacrifices<br \/>\nfreedom and growth. Some even fear for their mental and physical health when<br \/>\nthen begin to have pronounced spiritual experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"line-height:150%\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;line-height:150%\">All these concerns are about practices and experiences<br \/>\nare not hollow. We have all seen examples of people who seem very committed to<br \/>\na religion or spiritual practice and the outcome is only distraction, a new<br \/>\nsource of control or, worse, a rational for the judgment of others. These,<br \/>\nhowever, would not be examples of effective applications of spiritual practices,<br \/>\nnor an effective expression of an integration of what spiritual experience teaches.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"line-height:150%\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;line-height:150%\">A healthy spiritual practice is both the mechanics <i>and<\/i> a certain mindset about the<br \/>\npractice. These elements, combined with guidance, grace, and dedication, are<br \/>\nthe elements necessary to liberate the human spirit. Without an open mind and<br \/>\nheart, without a sincere desire to learn, grow and discover, any spiritual<br \/>\npractice can become a <i>barrier<\/i> to<br \/>\ngrowth. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"line-height:150%\"><span class=\"huge1\"><span>Much<br \/>\nof what scares people about spirituality is its common incongruence with the<br \/>\nabsolute trust in science and the five ordinary senses. The spiritual world<br \/>\nlargely remains beyond the scope of material science, however, that is not a<br \/>\nproblem, that is simply it&#8217;s nature. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;line-height:150%\">In his magnificent book, &#8220;The Little Prince,&#8221; <span class=\"bodybold1\"><span>Antoine de Saint-Exupery writes, &#8220;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"huge1\"><span>It is only with the<br \/>\nheart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.&#8221; <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"line-height:150%\"><span class=\"huge1\"><span>Joseph<br \/>\nCampbell, the great historian of mythology and religion, affirms this by<br \/>\npointing out that nearly every culture in the world holds foundational stories<br \/>\nof sacred heroes who&#8217;s only salvation comes from facing their deepest fears and<br \/>\nrisking the life that is familiar in favor of a willingness to explore the<br \/>\nunknown. Often we must die to what we know in order to be reborn and revived.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"line-height:150%\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;line-height:150%\">It is this dimension of the spiritual journey that<br \/>\nremains the greatest barrier: fear. Anywhere fear lives, the Spirit retreats.<br \/>\nIn groups, in families, or in ourselves. Where fear grows, love is diminished,<br \/>\nand the qualities of The Sacred are forgotten. People become paralyzed by the<br \/>\nfear of the unknown, the fear of being rejected, the fear of not being in<br \/>\ncontrol, and the fear of the discomfort they will face as they surrender who<br \/>\nthey have come to believe they are. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"line-height:150%\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;line-height:150%\">A healthy spiritual practice will cause you to become<br \/>\naware of your limits and your opportunities to heal and grow. This ensures that<br \/>\nit will not always be easy, but that it will always be worthwhile. My own<br \/>\njourney has also come with many difficult cross-roads: loneliness, surprises,<br \/>\nthe recognition of old wounds, hard choices, and the need to make many<br \/>\nsacrifices.
