I&#8217;ve written about troubled celebs in a number of my books. Lest we think there&#8217;s not a rich history of this sort of thing, here are 10 entries from my book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/James-Dean-Died-Here-Locations\/dp\/1891661310\/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpt_3\">&#8220;James Dean Died Here &#8211; The Locations of America&#8217;s Pop Culture Landmarks.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-stamp\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">Where would the tabloids, then and now, been without these events? What celeb events do you think created the biggest tabloid feeding frenzies?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-stamp\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Cooke, Sam<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-stamp\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Hacienda Motel (now Polaris Motel)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">9137 South Figueroa Street<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Los Angeles, California<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Popular soul singer Sam Cooke<br \/>\n(&#8220;You Send Me,&#8221; &#8220;Wonderful World,&#8221; &#8220;Another Saturday Night&#8221;) was shot to death<br \/>\nat the site of the former Hacienda Motel in December of 1964 by a motel manager<br \/>\narmed with .22 pistol. Cooke had taken a young woman to the seedy motel, and<br \/>\nafter the shooting she claimed that he had tried to rape her. However, evidence<br \/>\nsuggests that she may have been a prostitute who may have tried to rob Cooke<br \/>\n(leading to Cooke&#8217;s panic and subsequent chase). When Cooke broke down the door<br \/>\nof the manager&#8217;s office, where he mistakenly believed the woman had gone, the<br \/>\nshocked manager shot and killed him.<\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-stamp\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><br \/>\n<!--StartFragment--><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Crane, Bob<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\"># 132A, Winfield Apartments<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">(Now the Winfield Place<br \/>\nCondominiums)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">7430 East Chaparral Road (1\/4 mile<br \/>\neast of Scottsdale Road)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Scottsdale, Arizona<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">On the afternoon of June 29, 1978,<br \/>\nactress Victoria Berryl knocked on the door to this apartment. She expected her<br \/>\nknock to be answered by former TV star Bob Crane. There was no answer. She<br \/>\npushed the open the unlocked door and went inside. There she found his<br \/>\nhalf-naked body lying in bed. His face was so badly beaten that he was<br \/>\nunrecognizable from the left side. An electric cord was wrapped around his<br \/>\nneck. Crane&#8217;s pal and partner in sordid behavior, John Carpenter, was<br \/>\neventually charged but found not guilty of the crime in 1994.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\"><!--StartFragment-->\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Dogg, Snoop Doggy<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Woodbine Park (on Motor Avenue at<br \/>\nNational Boulevard)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Palms district <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">West Los Angeles, California<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">In 1993, Rap singer Snoop Doggy<br \/>\nDogg was arrested for murder. Allegedly, on August 25, 1993, he drove a black<br \/>\nJeep Cherokee during a drive-by shooting at this park. Philip Woldemariam, an<br \/>\nalleged gang member, was shot and killed. Dogg claimed self-defense, and was<br \/>\neventually acquitted of the murder charges. The jury deadlocked on lesser<br \/>\ncharges, which were later dropped.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Downey, Jr., Robert<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">29169 Heathercliff Road<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Malibu, California<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">The 31-year-old actor was busted<br \/>\nin Malibu on July 16, 1997 for wandering into his neighbor&#8217;s house and passing<br \/>\nout on their bed. The neighbor, Lisa Curtis, returned home, found a strange man<br \/>\nasleep in her house, and called the police, who arrested him for trespassing<br \/>\nand being under the influence of drugs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\"><\/p>\n<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Grant, Hugh<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Pick up site: Northeast corner of<br \/>\nSunset Boulevard and Courtney Avenue<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Arrest site: Three blocks away at<br \/>\nthe intersection of Curson and Hawthorn Avenues<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Hollywood, California<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">On June 27, 1995, pretty boy<br \/>\nEnglish actor Hugh Grant picked up hooker Divine Brown here on Sunset<br \/>\nBoulevard. Busted in the act just a few blocks away, Grant ultimately received<br \/>\nprobation and paid a small fine. Rather than harm his career, if anything, the<br \/>\nincident seemed to bolster it.<\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\"><\/p>\n<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Herman, Pee Wee<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">South Trail Theater (former site)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">6727 S. And it was on that date, July 26, 1991, that<br \/>\nHerman was arrested by police for exposing himself in an X-rated movie theater.<br \/>\nPee-Wee dolls were recalled from toy stores and CBS dropped plans to broadcast<br \/>\nthe remaining five <i>Pee Wee&#8217;s Playhouse<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Palatino\"> episodes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoBodyText2\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\"><span style=\"font-family:Palatino\">Soon<br \/>\nafter, Herman, the butt of ten thousand wisecracks&#8211;got a rousing ovation that<br \/>\nSeptember when he walked onstage at the <i>MTV Video Music Awards<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Palatino\"> and casually inquired, &#8220;Heard any good jokes<br \/>\nlately?&#8221; Today, the adult theater has been replaced by a restaurant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\"><!--StartFragment-->\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Michael, George<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Will Rogers Memorial Park<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">9650 Sunset Boulevard (just across<br \/>\nfrom the Beverly Hills Hotel)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Beverly Hills, California<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">On April 8, 1998, pop star George<br \/>\nMichael decided to enter the men&#8217;s room at this well-mannered park and engage<br \/>\nin what police described as a &#8220;lewd act.&#8221; (The park was under fairly regular<br \/>\nsurveillance after cops realized that it had become a &#8220;hot zone.&#8221;) Michael was<br \/>\nalone in the restroom at the time&#8211;which is located near the northwest corner of<br \/>\nthe park. Michael was arrested, found guilty of the charge, and eventually<br \/>\nsentenced to perform community service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\"><\/p>\n<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Neil, Vince<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">The Esplanade at Sapphire Street <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Redondo Beach, California<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce frontman Vince Neil<br \/>\nhad been living it up at his Redondo beach home for three days, when he decided<br \/>\nto make a run to a local liquor store for more booze. Nicholas &#8220;Razzle&#8221; Dingley<br \/>\n(a member of the Finnish punk band Hanoi Rocks), went along for the ride.<br \/>\nComing home from the booze run, Neil, driving with a personal blood alcohol<br \/>\nlevel almost twice the legal limit, swerved sharply to avoid a parked fire<br \/>\ntruck. His red 1972 Ford Pantera then smashed into a white Volkswagon,<br \/>\nkilling&#8221;Razzle&#8221; Dingley. Neil escaped with minor injuries, but the man in the<br \/>\nVolkswagon was left with brain damage and paralysis. Though Neil was arrested<br \/>\nfor vehicular manslaughter, amazingly, he got off with just a 30-day jail<br \/>\nsentence.<\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><br \/>\n<!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Nicholson, Jack<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">The corner of Riverside Drive and<br \/>\nMoorpark Street (near the Lakeside Golf Course)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Studio City, California<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">On February 8, 1994, Jack<br \/>\nNicholson allegedly hopped from his car here and attacked motorist Robert<br \/>\nBlank&#8217;s Mercedes-Benz with a golf club. It seems Blank had cut him off in<br \/>\ntraffic. He smashed the windshield and dented the roof with his golf club, and<br \/>\nthen drove away. Though Nicholson was charged with misdemeanor assault and<br \/>\nvandalism, Blank also sued him, eventually settling out of court.<\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\"><\/p>\n<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Von Bulow, Claus<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Clarendon Court<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Bellevue Avenue at Rovensky<br \/>\nAvenue, across from Rovensky Park<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">Newport, Rhode Island<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">In 1979, Claus Von Bulow was<br \/>\nconvicted of trying to murder his wealthy wife Sunny at this opulent Newport<br \/>\nmansion by injecting her with insulin (allegedly, so he could make off with her<br \/>\nmoney.) In 1982, however, he was acquitted after a successful appeal.
