In the final episode of “House,” Hannah died of ‘fat embolism,’ which was apparently caused by an amputation operation. Since then, the Internet is a-Tweet with wondering … what is a ‘fat embolism?’ And Tuskateers<\/em> have been inquiring, “If I’m fat, am I in danger of getting a ‘fat embolism?’
\nFat embolism<\/em> was first described by Von Bergmann in the year 1873. It is a syndrome that is the result of an accumulation of ‘fat macro globules’ in the thin tracks of the lungs. As you might imagine, these fat macro globules can lead to breathing problems. The fat in the lungs essentially chokes the respiratory passageways. (Not pretty.)
\nRest assured, it is a rare disease. However, it can occur when fat enters the circulatory system (during surgery or trauma; a fracture to a large bone, or during childbirth). Again – it is rare. The prevalence of fat embolism in fracture patients is reported to be between 0.25% to 1.25%.
